Replacing windshield Gasket...

Well took the windshield out today... Real PITA... The rubber had turned hard like plastic..So I couldn't cut it... So I slowly chiseled the gasket out...ordered new gasket from DC..

Here is my question..Local auto glass company wants $150 to reinstall..Wondering if I can reinstall the windshield by myself...from what I have seen it looks simple enough..But videos always shows two people installing it.....is it possible for one person to install it ?

If so any pointers?

Thank you

Two people is best in my opinion because you want one person outside pushing/ "slapping" the glass into position while the inside person pulls the rope. I've done 3 cars and they all went fine with help. I used water with dish detergent as a lubricant. That being said my local glass company wanted $100 to do the job. Maybe you can shop around....Good Luck...

It is funny how threads pop up. I was just talking to the glass company today about reinstalling my window. They said $125, and I would have to order the gasket myself. I am tempted to do it myself also.

It take one person inside pulling the rope, one outside pushing.

If that rubber was bad I bet the glass is too. I'd check around to see what new glass installed would run. Sometimes you can get a better install price and have new glass.

Hope you ordered the right rubber, there are two, one has a slot for trim the other not.

The 65 was a standard cab but decided I wanted to go with the windshield stainless trim, which I understood could be a bit more complicated for a 'do it myselfer'. I damaged the original by not properly protecting during storage so decided to have the shop order and install the new and I provided the DC gasket, this was several years ago w/ not leaks, they used a sealant. There were a few strange looks as I drove to the Auto Glass shop wearing goggles??

I did mine last year with a DC rubber and an experienced helper who, half way through, figured we had the wrong rubber. We almost broke the windshield. I'd gladly pay the $150.

Just - Nov '14 - had mine replaced at Safelite, 66 Custom Cab, tinted with the "shade band" - darker tint across the top, including the gasket out the door installed. $262.32 Took them two days from the time I called to get it done.

my biggest fear is either myself or someone else damaging the new paint when installing the new windshield . Myself I know not to wear a belt with buckles when working on cars , we always had to have the leather belts with hidden hooks when I was in the shop . Also no rings , watches , stuff in pockets etc. When you go to these shops lately you see guys with all of these things and more like wallets with chains hanging form them , big metal bracelets , jeans with metal rivets . Seems they do not care how they treat your vehicle anymore old days 70's to 90's we would have been sent home that day no pay or fired if we dressed that way more than a couple of time .

I'm no where close to paint yet so I have a while before I'm ready for my windshield install .

Glass Doctor installed mine for 100 bucks this is after I paid almost 400 bucks for the glass and gasket. Turns out they could have got the glass for half what I paid. This is a do it your self project that is better left to the pros. Stainless is available on ebay and Carpenter has the good gaskets. Safelite and Glass doctor will get the glass for cheap. BTDT.

I purchased a new windshield a couple of months ago, tinted with a darker band on the top. I will gladly pay 100 to 125 for a real professional to install it when I'm ready, all sealed up and ready for liquid sunshine.

I have seen guys trying to install windshields in vehicles and ultimately crack them and then have to go buy another one. Glass doesn't bend very easily. You really have to be careful of cracking the windshield when you remove it if you are going to reuse it.

I may attempt the rear window as it is flat and smaller and cheaper if I break it. Watched my Dad do it once with the rope method, however he wouldn't tackle a windshield replacement, he left it to the pro's.

Actually did it myself after Installer never showed up... Took me 20 minutes( gasket was already installed on windshield).. Taped a few playing cards to the lip to guide the bottom seal when I first set it in..I then slowly moved the rope up the sides (reaching through the side windows) while I stood outside pushing in... After I made the turns on both sides it popped right in...
