shifting issue

Hi I just bought a 93 f 250 with a 460 in it and 115000 miles on it what it is doing is if you have it in over drive it takes off on od and stays there like it has one gear but if you pull the shifter down to second it well drop to second but it wont drop to first when you pull it down to first. It's kind of odd I did have the check engine light come on while driving but it goes away if you shut the truck off and start it back up. Haven't had a chance to read the code yet. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue

The code is an egr code Talked to a friend who is a mechanic and has had several of these trucks and he said that it could be the sylenoid pack or not getting power or it could be bad. He said that the transmission well default to 3rd gear which is where mine is and he also said if you pull it down into second it well run second but not first, also my same issue. So that well be my first test... Was going to change the trans filter anyway
