Speed of gear reduction starter

I have a 1987 F250 with a 6.9 Diesel. Has anybody watched their tach when they start their 6.9 or 7.3 with a gear reduction starter? I've bought a starter from NAPA and it's supposed to be a gear reduction starter. I've had gear reduction before and they seemed to turn over faster than the starter I have now from NAPA. By the tach it's turning over about 400 rpm. Fast or slow?

My tachometer doesn't work that good so I can't say via my instruments, but doing the math it's almost 7 revs per second.

I do not have the gear reduction starter and my truck spins about that fast, I went out and counted.

You all more than likely have gear reduction starters, the direct drives were Delcos and only factory in the '83 & '84 IDIs.

There are two types of gear-reduction starters -- inline and offset.
I've found that with good batteries, I get better cranking speed with the inline one I have than any offset ones I've used.

Exactly, when I first saw the planetary gear reduction starter I thought it was a straight drive just by the way it looks on the outside. Someone here corrected me and told me about the PGR so I learned something new.

I also learned the PGR starters spin the IDI crazy fast, I'm not going to mess with the stock ones again.

But the nose-less planetary gear reduction that came with the IDI was fresh too so for giggles I tried it out. That thing turns over like no IDI I've ever had!!! When I first started the 7.3 I didn't glow the plugs because I figured I needed to prime the system first, just installed engine, fuel filter, etc.
It spun so fast it fired right off with no GPs! And my batteries are getting old to boot. So I'm sold.

Make sure you don't get it though, I'm full of crap.

Just to clarify: the PGR starter is pictured above on the left, correct?

The one on the /right/ in that picture is the one I'm running myself.

It seems to do /much/ better than this one:

I do have two good batteries and good cables, but the unit /should/ be shot -- the bushing at the tip was totally destroyed, and it had been worked a long time. I cleaned it up, put a new bushing in, and it cranks my brand-new, high-compression motor over faster than any other starter I've seen.

The "high-torque" ones probably have a lower gear reduction, and thus, lower top speed?

I bought one off of eBay. It turns faster than my PSD and has very little draw compared to the OEM one.

I know on my old '94, the starter died when I was getting ready to sell it. Found one at the parts store, can't remember the brand, and it sounded more like a PSD starter, vs. the old one that sounded like a gasser cranking over. So I dunno.

Seemed like one of those upgrades I wish I'd done a couple years prior though, definitely cranked up faster!
