Eratic Blinkers

I have a 2003 Explorer Centennial and recently both blinkers would blink anywhere from 1 - 6 times and will turn off. Both sides. Flashers work fine. Lights work fine. I changed the MFS (guessing here but I have 224,000 miles on it). Blinkers worked fine the first few times then went back to the same problem. Will the flashers cause this? I do hear a very fast double click sometimes and have heard a buzz on a few occasions.
I appreciate any input you have.

Does the turn signal stalk cancel when the lights stop flashing, or the stalk remains engaged yet the bulbs stop flashing?

Stays engaged. Signals may blink once, twice and then stop even while vehicle is not in motion. Sometimes they work properly but only about one out of 25 times. Sometimes it they blink 6 times?
Gonna replace the flasher just because I have high mileage.

The flasher does seem like a reasonable suspect. I'd also suggest you inspect the wiring the steering column for evidence of damage, particularly at any connectors. Others have found that the harness seems to be a tad bit too short and gets strained from the tilt steering wheel. Some have had troubleshooting success by changing the tilt position of the steering wheel and finding the symptoms go away. That's a pretty quick thing to try that might yield a very good clue as the the problem.
