They just used the same base number that Ford originally came up with and added their own alphanumeric codes to identify the part as theirs and what options.
Each part that Ford makes will have a base number, with additional numbers and letters before or after to tell the year made, color, and other features of that one part.

Ya thats what i have been seeing. I am getting my XRF stuff all together in my cart and i just saw that and wondered why. But i am going XRF parts for sure. Been reading alot of good reviews and some torture test ppl have run there vehicles through

XRF INC. is actually a Canadian company, the US arm is owned by the holdings company for tax and liability purposes. Just like Moog is a Federal Mogul company.
As to the cataloging, it is expensive for a smaller company to create and maintain. Many companies pay for and use the catalog data of larger companies. It also makes it easier on the parts industry.
