Pulling the motor, preventative maintenance while in there?

I need to pull the motor on this truck I just bought. Long story short it has low compression more then likely from the the previous owner using ether and destroying the rings. I am trying to rack my brain to think logicly on what preventative maintenance to do while I have the motor out. I was defiantly thinking water pump and oil cooler. Does anyone have a more formal list of things they did when they pulled theirs? Also i searched for a good bit but does anyone have a write-up on pulling this out for a hand shaker. I remember Corey B. talking about something with a a dowel pin you need to line up or grind down. i can't remember which..Just want to make sure I'm all set before i get into it.

Hey Phil. Good to see you around.
I would change out the up pipe gaskets and rebuild the pedestal. Maybe even the turbo depending on condition.
Reseal the dipstick to the pan, change out the high press oil lines, check pass side fuel line for wear at the clamp, rebuild the fuel bowl.
Are you going to rebuild this engine or replace it with a used engine? If used I'd also toss in a new lpop and injector orings.

I'd probably have the heads looked at. I would concern myself with anything that is covered by the oil pan or headwork. The rest of the list is really just bolted on the long block.

I think if you want to do basically any upgrades or preventative maintenance or really anything at all, you should do it, everything is so incredibly much easier to work on when you can walk all around the thing instead of crawling on top of it or sliding under it. Otherwise I agree with what everyone else has said sounds good. I wish I had more money when I pulled mine last year, I would have let them spend it better for me, haha.

In regards to pulling the engine with a 6 speed, I don't remember anything special. Took the front clip off and removed everything but the AC stuff from up there, got the wiring harness off the monster, removed/disconnected all the fluid lines, popped the motor mount and engine to tranny bolts loose, and went to town. We may have had a jack under the tranny to lift it a little but I don't remember for sure. All in all pulling it was the easy part. We had a hell of a time getting the input shaft to line up when we were putting it back together, took us about 3 hours here. We never used a dowel or rod to line anything special up though. Keep in mind, we were learning as we went though.

New welded oil piston jets and por15 or the like on the oil pan, new bellow up-pipes and new banjo bolts on the back side of the heads.

There was a recent post like the OP here a couple days ago. I would inspect the exhaust manifolds for leaks. Usually just an issue for us Eastern boyz but they can be a major PITA in the truck.

I honestly have to say I never heard of a problem with the exhaust manifolds, east coast, west coast, north, south or wherever. Now the up pipes yes. Theres more problems with the gas exhaust manifolds from cracking or studs breaking off.

Mine look bad, not as bad as the pic below, but bad. A search for 7.3L rusted manifolds will bring up all the info you need.

I'm just sayin, if they look like this, replace them now while the engine is out

I did not see the year of this motor. My 01 had PMR connecting rods that are known to start failing around 400k miles. I went through my 7.3 and replaced the rods, and about everything else. That is not a solution for everyone, however it was for me as it is the last vehicle I will ever own. Check the threads to learn more about PMR (powdered metal rods) rods and you may want to replace them if you have them. Good luck!

mine is out now,i used POR 15 everywhere in the engine bay, painted the motor, valve covers, and high temp paint by por 15 on lots of stuff, resurfacing exhaust manifolds and re installing with stainless bolts,do the oil cooler if you havent, itll never be easier,if you have no rust por 15 the oil pan, change anything on the rear of the motor like up pipes, banjo bolts fittings
