5 speed zf transmission questions.
Hi guys, I am finally putting my new clutch in and have some transmission questions. After pulling mine out I discovered it has a s5-42 transmission in it, which doesn't make any sense to me. I thought all powerstrokes had the s5-47 tranny in it. So I walked over to a spare tranny and transfer case I got off of a 96 truck and that tranny was a 47, with a larger transfer case. Anybody know why my transfer case in my 95 would be different than the one out of the 96. Also, my gear ratio's on the side of the 42 say 4.14-.77 while the 47 says 5.08-.76. So I am assuming the 47 tranny has a lower first gear?

Ahh,
Why is the 4407 so much bigger? Must be a heavier duty transfer case?
Well I decided to put the 47 in it cause mine has been hard shifting in second and third gears for a couple years now. I took a peak in the 47 and saw it had a little surface rust on a few gears but I think i am going to just see what happens. I will change the fluid after 50 miles or so and see what comes out.

The S5-47 and 4407 t-case combo are rated for a little more torque. If the '96 trans and t-case came out of an F350, the front yoke on the t-case will not work on the F250 front drive shaft. It has to be from an F250. If it was from an F350 and you need that yoke, PM me and I will trade you a F250 yoke for the F350 yoke.

I have no idea what it was from. I got a motor, tranny and transfer case from somebody several years ago. I just know the motor had a 96 date on it. I recently got rid of that. I hope I don't regret that. Although i did rob quite a few parts off of it, including a LuK solid flywheel.
Im impressed with the ZF information on the ZF website, they have a full service manual I downloaded for free, and several other docs. Although I have read several different times now that the 42 is not interchangeable with the 47. So far they seem the same to me.

They are interchangeable. Parts are different, but the trans itself can be swapped in place of a 42. I've done it many times. Don't get rid of that yoke. I'm gonna check and see if there are any numbers on them to see which one you have. If it is from a 350, would you wanna trade it for a 250 one so if you ever decide to use that t-case?
