Even now after that experience I'm nervous about giving them my plastic if there isn't a cash discount. Who knows what they are doing with it while I'm out filling up? Holding 90 gallons like I do I would have to run my card three times at least at the pump. I have asked credit card companies, the managers at the stations and my bank why they cut you off at $75 or $100 and they all blame each other. No straight answers! I've even asked the station manager if they were in business to sell fuel. Yes, then why cut me off???

My thoughts on that is, when you run your card, they know how much your good for so why cut you off if your good for it? With my 5er, I don't think I could get to far if I drove off, LOL! For the most part anymore, I fill up without my 5er, less hassle and with 90 gallons I don't have to stop as much. I really like it!

Maybe they do it in case someone steals a credit or debit card. The most they could get is $75 at one time. More than likely they won't stand there and run a stolen card again. Of course that theory has holes too. These freakin idiot dope head thieves now days are pretty brave.....or stupid.

that's true. I sure like filling from the bulk tank. I haven't filled at a gas station in probably 6 months. I don't even know if I would remember how lol.

Yes, the purpose is to limit fraudulent use of a stolen card. Around here, when you hit one of those limits when paying at the pump, it won't accept the card again at the pump. You have to go inside, and show ID, to exceed the limit and restart the pump. Last time this happened to us (we were filling both tanks and a bunch of jerry cans), the station was closed and it was pay-at-the-pump only. Fortunately my wife had her card with her.

I would personally pay in cash, or pre-pay if you know roughly how much fuel you need. Some pumps at certain stations like shell, will charge you more than what your fuel is worth. So you bought 10$ of fuel, but they put a hold of 75$ on your account when you pay at the pump. I've seen that happen to guys before. You get that money back, but you are then unable to access that money for a few days until it is released back to your account. I personally don't take the chance. I know some places like truck stops out east will hold on to your ID to turn the pump on, and then you pay for the fuel to get your ID back inside.
I've never had this problem, since I don't pay at the pump. I usually go inside and get something like a drink or food with a purchase of fuel.
http://www.creditcards.com/ There is a link to what I'm talking about. I just found out about this not too long ago from some older gentleman in O'Reilly's last winter.
