want to add running lights to my step bars, suggestions for wiring please

I am a trucker at heart and I like to add running lights to my running board / step bars. As far as installation of the lights, done it several times, no problem there. However in the past, I have just ran a wire back to the trailer plug and used a scotch lock / snap connector to feed the running board lights.

if I do the same on a 2012, will that cause havick with the computer? Most likely I will be running 7 lights, all 3/4" diameter LED style.

If this isn't' the best solution, can anyone suggest where to get power for marker lights.

thanks!

I tapped the license plate light wiring as it was the easiest to access. I would also use a small wire loom to protect the wire as you run it along the inside of the frame. But stay away from scotch locks., at a minimum use a good crimp butt connector with shrink tubes. You will have no problem with the extra load with that few of lights.

Led strip lights work pretty good. I just have mine hooked up to the door though not as running lights.
The front lights I have hooked into running lights behind headlight. All sealed up with heat shrink to prevent moisture.
Here is my big rig

Yes, you can tap into the trailer plug to run your lights. I installed some running lights on my running boards as well.
Like weyland426 said, use crimp butt connectors with heat shrink tubes.

My 2000 has a round plug on each side that appears to be for the factory lighted running boards that did not come on the truck.

That is what I tapped to do my lights above but the only come on when you open the door or turn on your main interior light.

Makes sense. The factory lights only come on when the interior lights come on.

Wired the front ID lamps to the parking lamp, and the rear to the license plate lamp.

Check out this members thread. He also has a link to a site he runs about how to wire his running lamps along the bottom of his doors.

Here I linked to the exact project. If this is sort of what you are looking for.

Look these up on Amazon.

I made my own brackets and I wired them to the right side marker lamp.

Heres my setup. I tapped into the trailer wiring. Soldered and shrink wrapped. Been on for a while with no issues so far. Got the lights cheap from a flea market.
