New to carbs

I have an 86 bullnose with the 4.9 l6. It has a little one barrel carb on top and am wanting to give it something bigger for more power. Which would be better, a 2 or 4 barrel. I want this to be as simple as possible because this is my first time working with carbs. Besides a new intake manifold, what else do I need to put a new carburetor in? I am new so be gentle

Ive been told the 2bbl aint worth the money, but a offenhauser intake (about $235 i think) and then around a 390cfm 4bbl on top. As long as you dont floor it alot its supposed to give better mileage too.

A lot has been written about this, so use the search function and see what has been said and what the experiences have been. No need to rehash it here.

A 1986 6-banger came with a computer-controlled carburetor and distributor, and changing to a non-computer-controlled carb also means changing to a non-computer-controlled ignition system...

A bigger carb is not going to make it run better. Been there, done that. Like was mentioned, if a bunch of hoses and other junk has been taken off, it will run better if you put a older style distributor in it.

Hello, 86bully. Welcome!

I drive a 4.9L engine powered truck and love the six cylinder as much as anyone! If you can embrace the power characteristics [low speed torque] of this engine and want the best gas mileage available in these brick shaped trucks, then enjoy... BUT, if you really want power and performance, I recommend you find a similar truck already equipped with a V8. In the long run, you will likely be dollars ahead!

It is your truck and you just have to make goals and follow them through. We will be glad to assist you!
