At the bottom of the Title and Registration form (DMV VSA-17A)
It asks the following questions:
Answer the following questions to determine if your vehicle qualifies for personal property tax relief.
If you can answer YES to any of the following questions, your vehicle is considered by state law to have a business use and does NOT qualify for personal property tax relief.
- Is more than 50% of the vehicle's annual mileage used as a business expense for federal income tax purposes OR reimbursed by an employer?
- Is more than 50% of the depreciation associated with the vehicle deducted as a business expense for federal income tax purposes?
- Is the cost of the vehicle expensed pursuant to Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Service Code?
- If the vehicle is leased by an individual, does the leasing company pay the tax without reimbursement from the individual?
I started trying to write off some of my mileage because I have a rental property. It was way more trouble than it'd be worth. Ditto on a small home office, tool storage, and tool depreciation.
Plus, the home office and mileage deductions are BIG red flags for audits.
It's a personal use vehicle.

PA says my EX is a station wagon and that means I pay regular car fees, annual fees for a 3/4 ton truck (like the EX really is) are more than 3Xs the car tags. My '96 Chevy 1/2 ton tags are more than my Ex's, heck, I used to have a '79 El Camino that the state considered to be a truck too. Crazy to pay less for an EX than an El Camino! But I'm good with that kind of crazy if it saves me money!

Maryland is the only state that I know of that calls it MVA... So I'm assuming that you're in Maryland.

Maryland has always taxed by weight, I grew up there and remember my parents having to pay more for a full sized car than a compact.

Yes just like a truck, I have it registered for 25000lbs. Much higher fees, but alot cheaper than getting a ticket for being over the registered weight. Keep in mind that I can still be ticketed for being over GVWR/GCWR, or over on the axles. The fines for being over the registered weight are huge though.
