SUV in VA. You can register as a truck but lose the tax relief, which only applies to cars.

My Dodge 2500 is registered as a truck and qualifies for tax relief.

At the bottom of the Title and Registration form (DMV VSA-17A)

It asks the following questions:

Answer the following questions to determine if your vehicle qualifies for personal property tax relief.
If you can answer YES to any of the following questions, your vehicle is considered by state law to have a business use and does NOT qualify for personal property tax relief.
  • Is more than 50% of the vehicle's annual mileage used as a business expense for federal income tax purposes OR reimbursed by an employer?
  • Is more than 50% of the depreciation associated with the vehicle deducted as a business expense for federal income tax purposes?
  • Is the cost of the vehicle expensed pursuant to Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Service Code?
  • If the vehicle is leased by an individual, does the leasing company pay the tax without reimbursement from the individual?
https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/pptrqual.html

I started trying to write off some of my mileage because I have a rental property. It was way more trouble than it'd be worth. Ditto on a small home office, tool storage, and tool depreciation.

Plus, the home office and mileage deductions are BIG red flags for audits.

It's a personal use vehicle.

Maryland is the only state that I know of that calls it MVA... So I'm assuming that you're in Maryland.

Looks like they do it by weight.

Passenger or Multi-Purpose Vehicles Under 3700 Lbs Gross, it's $135.00.
Passenger or Multi-Purpose Vehicles Over 3700 Lbs Gross, it's $187.00.
Trucks up to 7000 Lbs Gross (1/2 and some 3/4 Ton), it's $161.50
Trucks up to 10,000 Lbs Gross (3/4, and 1 Ton or larger, it's $214.00.

But I'm good with that kind of crazy if it saves me money!
Yep, here in PA its registered as a station wagon. I still call it my "truck" but every now and then my wife likes to remind me that the state considers it a station wagon

Maryland has always taxed by weight, I grew up there and remember my parents having to pay more for a full sized car than a compact.

Do the different classifications carry different fees? Is "Property carrying" kind of like a truck just not commercial?

Yes just like a truck, I have it registered for 25000lbs. Much higher fees, but alot cheaper than getting a ticket for being over the registered weight. Keep in mind that I can still be ticketed for being over GVWR/GCWR, or over on the axles. The fines for being over the registered weight are huge though.
