It sure was fun, but never felt real safe blasting along next to a semi on the highways. Put a lot of miles on it traveling to Mini Meets, up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway, and other road trips. Bought a new 2004 version when they came out but it wasn't the same. It's gone now too. Stu

Axle swap

Well I've located a 91 F350 chassis with all the running gear that MIGHT work. I'm just wondering if anyone has used the Dana 60 front in a M-H before? I know the spring centers are a bit out already (ours is 35.5" vs 36.5" on the Dana) but I'm wondering what else other than the overall length might be a showstopper? I'm trying to go take a look at it next week, so any thoughts before then?

That would be some really nice gear. The sterling 10 1/4 rear is a great axle too. I have one in my '92 and put one in my '59. I've know all 3 previous owners of my '92 and if none of them could overwork it, it's bulletproof. Does it have the ZF or auto?

Well it was a happy day here at last. Got these lovelies off the deck of the gooseneck with the help of our farms john deer. All nestled into the carport to await the strip down.

On the 40' trailer waiting to be offloaded.

Some pushing and pulling with the tractor was required to get them into their spots.

Biggest issue I noticed on the F5 is that the hood badges are for an F3... Dang..
Also it was running, but is hesitant now. I'll sort that after the tear down / cleanup and rebuild with conversion to 12V

Like said earlier, the F-3 hood is 52 but the truck's numbers, and the other V8 nose badge, say it's a 51. Of course if your title says it's a 52, and those numbers match the truck, it probably just means it got sold in 52 and titled that way. I have the same situation, a 51 F-3 (R3-4) that I bought with a clean Idaho title showing it as a 52.

Glad you got them home safe and sound. Let the fun begin. Stu

if your gonna stick with the 52 hood and 5 star extra hood trim i have a set of f6 shields i have no use for. unless your gonna try to find f5 shields? I read what Stu said about fords f5 and MH doing the f6 thing because of the wheelbase but it falls short on me at the moment.

Mark - I sent you a copy of that spec chart, didn't I? Don't know why they labeled them that way, but the 158" wb model F-5 is shown to be a M-H model R6-4. Stu

You probably did Stu, I've saved everything you have sent me so I will have to check. I'm not firing on all 8 today, to much gas and cleaner to my frontal lobe over the last 2 days trying to get the 79 to act right.

Well Stu, I think I understand. The V8 on the upper front valence is correct for a '51, but like you said it looks to be a later hood from an F3 at some point. Question is, other than badging, is there any difference between the 51 and 52 hoods? The side spears are easy enough, but annoying have any leads on a decent but not show quality front trim piece?

So work has kept me away from making any real progress as of late. The F5 is mostly stripped out and the cab is ready to come off here shortly.

Starting on taking apart the M6 as the donor truck. The hydraulic dump is ok, but the framing for the bed looks to be bent. Unless someone here would find it useful, it's going to the scrapyard with a bunch more stuff. On the upside, looks like the Merc has 20" ring lock wheels like I got from another member here. So I have 2 full sets now! Which I might sell anyway depending on what axles I go with in the end. Also found the last original registration in the ashtray of the Merc. Anyone interested in an M6 rolling chassis (no engine or trans)?

The chaos is in full swing. Need to get rid of a chassis to make room

The hydraulic dump. PTO driven with an integral pump I believe

Great progress on a very cool truck! Is that an Anthony dump hoist? I have a friend that may want it.

Not sure what the make is on it, but sure does look like the others I have seen on here. It's pretty encrusted in grime from over the years, and the load bed I beams are slightly bent from the looks of it. All the linkage is there though.

The only difference between 51 and 52 hood is the number of vent holes on the nose. Besides the trim pieces obviously. On a 51 there are three vent holes while the 52 has only two. I'll see if I have pictures of each with trim removed to show it. IF I don't have file pics I'll take pics in the daylight of each hood to show it, then will come back to edit.

1951:

1952:

The 51 nose piece is chrome and generally pretty pitted when found. They are on eBay all the time, with price dependent on the extent of pitting. One of the guys probably has a spare too, and I'll see what I've got.

I sure have sympathy for your need to regain space. This week I came to that decision on my 1950 F-3/R3-4. Too much damage so it's gonna get parted out and donate its MH pieces to my 51 R3-4. Stu

Thanks Stu,

Looks to be a '52 hood with 2 holes.. just my luck.
Anyone have a lead on a 51 hood at all? The Merc is a '52 so is of no use there.

If I can't source a '51, I might go with rebadging it as a 52 if I can find the trim pieces

I've not tried it, but bet you could mount the 51 trim on the 52 hood. Stu

The size of the front holes in the 51 hood is different than in the 52 hood. The 51 hood holes are narrower and longer than the 52 hood, which are taller and shorter.

Putting a 51 trim on a 52 hood should be possible with some slight modifications. I may have a 51 hood. I'm in Northern California.
