Question 4.9L 300cid I-6 performance

Hey, I need some help here. I bought my 1988 F150 Custom pickup about 2 1/2 years ago. It has the 4.9L 300cid Inline Six-cylinder engine. The engine is excellent very reliable and running strong. My question is are there any performance upgrades available for this motor. I am looking for upgrades like filters, intakes, headers, computer chips (mine is fuel injected). I have been told there are parts available but I have been unable to locate any. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks...

If you're running that six in CA, forget it. It won't pass with any mods on it...emission *****. Now in Texas you could drop in a K&N air filter, retrofit exhaust to bigger pipes and one cat instead of two. The big six is a big air pump (any engne is just an air pump) with restricted air intake and exhaust. Open up both and it'll run a lot better with more power. Side-gapped plugs help, too.

Check out a company called Clifford Performance. I don't know if they have a web-site or not. Their motto is: 6=8! The have everything from Chrome valve covers to Nitros Set-ups. They are a bit pricey, but having a 6 that produces 300+hp is cool!!
Good luck....

Cliffords is junk, theyre parts may be decent, but the customer service is less than non-existant. besides which, they dont have much for an EFI motor like yours.

Hedman makes headers for the 300, not a pure bolt-on, but they make a good amount of power with a full exhaust. All the major cam grinders make cams available, Cranw to me seems to have the best grind in their Truck Power series, but thats just my opinion. you can find both those at summitracing.com.

Motorhaven, this sites online store, has Diablo and Superchips available, but i'd personally only get one to fix cam problems.

Definitly check out the inline six forum, theres lots of good ideas and friendly people down there!

Sorry about Clifford... Back about 12 years ago, I had used them for my first 300 build up. I had an ok experience with them. I guess they don't need the business, if they can't keep up with the changing times. I'll keep an eye out. You may want to spend the 5.95 to purchase the 2003 PAW catalog. It's got over 1200 pages of performance parts, and you can rebuild your 300 with a veriety of products from different manufacturers. Good luck and i'll talk to you later....
