'78 Crew 4x4 - Cummins Swap Begins - Build Thread

i ordered one from Raybuck Auto Body, free shipping so was a little less than Jeff's and is made by tha same company (MTI).
Well today i put the camper on to take it up to our parents house for easter. Figure it'd be a great way to test out the swap with a load. Well only made it halfway before tranny fluid started shooting out on the freeway. Had to have it towed home. There didn't seem to be any mechanical issues and the trans wasn't hot at all. Was cruising about 60 or more in OD & lockup. Will take a look at it tomorrow, am hoping it is just a blown trans cooler line.

Exactly......that's my luck. With my son's help today i got it back together and running. Only took about 4 quarts. 1/2 of that put a nice coat of anti-rust on everything underneath and back of the camper.

Took it on a trip to Portland swap meet this weekend. No issues. I think I got about 10 mpg. I don't have a speedo hooked up yet so on the way down I didn't know how fast i was going, but was keeping up with and passing traffic. On the way back I downloaded a speedo app on my phone. I think I was pushing around 75 on the way down.
I still need to get some more driving time with a load so I can figure out the speed/EGT mix for going up hills. For the most part I was able to maintain 70 going up hills and keep the EGT around 1250 or less. A couple times I let it get up to around 1350-1400 but backed off after a couple seconds. Need to get my tach hooked up now too.

Thumb is doing fine. Thanks for checking in. Here's a pic of the cuts the Doc had to make.
Picked up a sweet set of rear door panels at the Portland swap meet this weekend. No cracks and all the slots on the back are good except for one. They're brown so I'll have to throw on a coat of black.
And when I got home this was in the garage. My new 32 gal plastic rear tank.
My Dad came up to the swap meet and stayed with us for the weekend. He had a sheetmetal shop make a new valve cover trim out of stainless. This one is a prototype as we will make a couple small changes for the next one. Found a couple emblems to put on it
or
Then imagine a large Ford blue "CUMMINS" sticker in the middle. I think it'll turn out pretty cool.
