WOT = 30 mph / 2900 rpm, white smoke

- until I back off the throttle and allow transmission to shift.

Then, WOT = 45 mph / 2900 rpm, white smoke - until I back off the throttle and allow transmission to shift again.

how much boost are you showing on the scan gauge? Same thing mine did when the turbo went out.

BST reaches 4 or so (this in the lowest gear, at 2900 rpm)

Pull your EGR valve and make sure it is not sticking open. If that is ok watch VGT on your SGII and see if it hits 85%.

From what I understand the sgII reads boost in corrected PSI, so if you are getting 4 psi you have virtually no turbo boost. 2003 doesn't have a boost gauge on the dash nor does it have a wrench light to show over/under boost. One cause of white smoke is a drastic difference between fueling and air supply, if air is well choked off you get white smoke (you get black smoke if there is lots of air but too much fuel). So my first guess is you need a turbo, either rebuilt, cleaned or just plain a new turbo. First thing I would do is try to verify that boost reading, check the X-gauge programming, etc. Another clue is that you should get up to governed red line at WOt if you just let it go, so if you are not getting over 2900 rpm that is very low.

Edit: when my turbo was stuck and the vanes could not move, the VGT reading on the SGII meant nothing, it was all over the place. It had very odd readings. Which may itself be a clue, I guess...

Also check the intercooler boots for rips or if they come off.

Initially, problem as described:
Weak acceleration (no turbo?), slightly white exhaust, no upshift
BST = 2.8 / 3.5
VGT = 65 @ 800 rpm / 35 @ 2400 rpm

Eventually, problem cleared:
Strong acceleration (turbo obvious), snap-your-neck upshifts
WOT for 10 seconds = 60+mph, BST = 18 / 20

This happened the other day, then problem returned.

Turbo need cleaned ???
