How to operate the manual hubs
I recently purchased an F-250 down in TX and drove it home to CO. It is my first for auto/locking hubs, first for an electronic switch on the dash to engage the 4WD, first diesel and first turbo engine.
What is the procedure to operate the front hubs? What exactly is different between the "Auto" and the "Lock" settings? Can I leave the hubs in AUTO for highway driving and will they engage when I go off road and turn the 4WD **** on the dash? Do I have to be in Natural first to engage the 4WD?
I have the BFG All Terrain tires and they don't grip anything; snow, sand, dirt, pavement etc.

Most of the time you can leave them in Auto. They will automatically Engage when you the the switch to 4WD. It make take a few seconds for them to engage when you first turn the switch. They will also Disengage when you flip back to 2WD. Again, it may take a bit for them to actually disengage but don't worry they won't do any damage.
No need to be in neutral while switching between 2WD and 4WD. You can do this at any speed. It recommended to not switch above 50MPH though because you could cause damage.
The LOCK position on the front hubs works just like a normal manual hub. It locks them in so they are always locked. This can be useful if you are stuck and can't get the front wheels spinning to engage the hubs Automatically using the dash switch. You can drive with them locked all the time if you want. Many people do. Just be aware that the front axle/drive shaft will be spinning the entire time as well even though the transfer case is not engaged.
Unless you get stuck or there's a problem with the Auto mode you are fine leaving them there. They will engage and disengage as needed when you turn the switch on the dash.

To engage 4 low you must be stopped, in neutral, and have your foot on the brake pedal.
Also, the front wheels dont need to spin to engage the auto hubs; but it helps. Occasionally, especially if there is a vacuum leak, the auto hubs won't lock. This is whereits nice to have a manual override.
