Sorry if this has been discussed. I've searched and found a thread on both, but still don't understand the difference in the two?

Does either one add any extra height?
Which one is preferred?

I had Snow plow prep and camper on my 2010 XLT. It sit up taller than one without on a 2010.

The main difference, snow plow prep means that if you plow you are covered under the warranty. And some plow companies what to see that you have that package before they will sell and install a plow on your truck. (Granted, cash in hand would probably negate that)

It might make it so that you HAVE to have dual alternators, but I am not 100% on that.

 

Don't forget the heavy duty alternator and it used to be (don't know if it is now) a different clutch fan.

 

So are the springs the same on both? Does the heavy service package do anything to the rear?

On an F-350, you'll get the same 6K front springs whether it's snow plow, heavy service, camper or completely stock.
The only change you'll get with the snow plow prep or camper package is the alternater or the camper certification slip.
The springs are all the same.

The F-250 will get the upgrade from the 5,200 to the 6,000.

That is why I said I think it requires you to get dual alternators.... But it might be possible to just get the HD alternator.

However, you are correct as this is per the Ford web-site:

The Snow Plow Prep Package includes computer-selected springs for snow plow application and an extra-heavy-duty alternator with the Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel V8 or heavy-duty alternator with gas engine (not available with Heavy Service Suspension Package; requires 4x4).

I just purchased a 2015 with snow plow prep but my 2011 did not have the prep package. I find the ride is not rougher but more solid on the road. Wife says the ride feels the same. She has no idea what snow plow prep means.

 

I don't think you get dual alternators. Just a high output one.
Also the fan,cooling,Trans cooler added,etc might be different. It all depends on if it's a Diesel ,etc.
On mine I couldn't get the 3:55 gears when the snowplow package was added. Had to settle for 3:73's.
On a F350 the cost was small for the upgrade. On a F 250 gasser I would bet the cost is more. More components needed.

The ride I don't think is harsher..but more solid with the heavier rated springs in the front.

 

I have the dual alts and the snow plow prep. Not that I choose this. The truck with the stuff I wanted on it, had those options as well.

I could have had my 2011 with duals too.

357 total amps out of the dual setup.

 

On my 2012 6.7 the snow plow package was only $85.00 as a listed option. It also had a tow package and a 11,300 GVWR package listed. I am sure one of these features required the HD alternator. I have the 3:55 gear.
