Tailgate assist, how to remove tailgate
#3
Not sure about the tailgate assist part of it but on my truck, you drop the tailgate about 3/4 down and there is a spot on the hinge that allows you remove it off the passenger side post first and then it just pulls off the drivers side and thats after first disconnectiong the two cables which are slide clipped on.Hope this helps ya!!

According to the build sheet, mine has 'tailgate assist'....FWIW. It isn't anything I've seen that makes removal anything but loosening the two cables from the truck body, lowering the gate to about 3/4-1/2 way then pulling it off the RHS pivot then pulling it free from the LHS. Just make sure the camera cable (if equipped) is disconnected first and be prepared for some ungainly, difficult to balance weight though it really isn't particularly physically heavy.

There is a torsion spring inside the gate between the two hinges. Ford used this in the 78 and 79 Bronco. My 79 bronco had the easiest lifting tailgate ive ever laid my hands on

I would guess that it's on the RHS hinge and the 'keyway' for no better term that slides off to allow you to remove the tailgate. I would think you could easily check if you have the assist by trying to twist it with a tool of some sort after pulling the 'gate off. I do have to say that mine raises a bunch easier then the '06 SD that I had and it's for all intent, the same assembly

Here a picture I took by laying down right below the passenger side tail gate.
