rear differential leaking

The rear differential is leaking on my 2000 f350, i am going to replace the gasket. When I take the cover off will all the gears pop out or are they held in? Also how much differential fluid does it take?

What gasket is leaking? I don't think I've ever seen a leak from the cover gasket, but pinion seal leaks are common. No the gears won't fall out, but as soon as the cover comes loose, a couple quarts of stinky gear oil will pour out. It would be worth your time to head over to youtube.com and find a video on changing gear oil in your truck so you have an idea of what you're doing. There are a ton of them.

The capacity depends on what axle you have, but a SRW sterling 10.5" holds 7 pints.

ya im pretty sure its the cover gasket. the fluid is at bottom of differential and the gasket is sticking out the sides of differential.

I'd be surprised if there actually was a gasket at all unless the cover has been off before. Factory uses just silicone for the gasket.

Yeah you don't need a gasket on there. I don't even know why they sell them. Just clean up the mating surfaces and run a bead of RTV around the cover. Put it back on, let it sit for an hour and then fill it up.

Check and make sure the differential cover did not rust through, not a hole but seepage through surface rust toward the bottom as you may need a new cover. Mine did that after only being 4 years old. Get the serial number off the tab on the rear end and use that to buy the correct silicone and full synthetic gear lube. There should be no gasket. When you fill the rear-end only fill up to where you can stick your pinky into the hole to the first joint and touch the gear lube.

so I checked it out and it is seeping through the cover. So I ordered one from ebay, but it was the wrong one. I did not realize there are a few different ones. Does anybody know the part number for it from ford? It is a 2000 ford F350 5.4 v8 gas 4wd and has 12 bolts on the differential. In order to exchange it the seller said I need a part number from ford.

It sounds like the ebay guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Look at other pics in there.
