Insulin at the restaurant

Hi,

I'm assuming that there are one or two FTE folks who have use insulin themselves or have a family member who does.

My wife just started a while ago, and it will probably continue. Anyway, I just wonder how folks manage things. The blood sugar and shot aren't any real issues, it's hauling the darn stuff around.

I've been putting it in a soft sided insulated gimmick with a freezable brick. I keep a washcloth between the two so that it doesn't get too cold.

Two problems --
1. It's a little cumbersome
2. Yesterday we went to the casino and I left it in the van for a couple of hours. Temps were in the 20's and I'm sure that it was OK. But, it WILL get colder soon.

Just looking for tips on a better way. I bought some no ice gimmick from Amazon, but the instructions were off putting as they say. Apparently, if you weren't going to keep using it, you have to dry it out for TWO WEEKS!

Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

hj

Have you considered an insulin pump?

Sent from my mind thanks to the Internet and an app.

Have you thought of asking the doc to prescribe an insulin pen that doesn't need to be refrigerated when being used?

My mom uses Novolog in the AM and Humalog in the PM. The "backstock" of pens need to be stored in the fridge, but the current pen she's using doesn't.

The current pen that she uses sits on the kitchen table until it runs out, then she takes another one from the fridge and puts it on the kitchen table until it's all used up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Minnesota? Get a few more of those ice packs and leave them in the trunk of the car so they stay cold.

Thanks for the thoughts...

Insulin pumps -- probably couldn't get the insurance to cover. I don't think that they're very common.

Pens -- she doesn't like them - go figure. They are also supposed to be limited to 28 days of use -- which screws up the normal 30 and 90 day prescription stuff.

Thanks,

hj

The pumps are very common. Check with your insurance company. It is by far the best way to go

Not for the pens.

My Moms primary insurance carrier is TRICARE and with certain meds, they force the recipient to order through Express Scripts if they want insurance coverage on that med. One of those meds my Mom is forced to have filled by Express Scripts is her insulin, and they provide a three month supply of both her Novolog and her Humalog.

Thanks for all of the input guys, but I'm still looking.

Pump ... from what I read there is a 4x daily blood sugar check plus a lot of carb counting. She does 3x now and can barely stand that.

(A little history -- she's a type 2 and until some recent heavy duty surgery, she was managing well with oral meds. )

As for my 28 day comment, it depends on the insulin types. Manufacturers of some types claim 28 days is the max after opening. Our doc said that 30 was OK for one that I was worried about, so I'm hoping it's OK. I think that this is a commonly ignored issue.

Thanks again,

hj

Frequent blood sugar testing should be done regardless of your insulin delivery method.
