UPDATES....

Thought that I would post a few pics of updates to my project...

Obviously I don't rebuild Split Housing rear differentials every day, so I am having to build some specialized tools for removing the pinion bearing cup and the pinion support bearing. I have a mill which will make removing the rivets fairly easy. Should be going back together tomorrow.

Thanks for the update. I appreciate any pictures you can post of the ring and pinion change. Eventually I will re-gear my F-2.

troubles. ..

Right now having trouble getting the pinion bearing cup out of the housing. I do not have the proper puller to get it out... and not sure you can purchase it anywhere. Any help anyone could give would be appreciated. I have a small 4 ton Porto power on the inside pushing on the pinion shaft and it has not budged even withe adding some heat to the housing around the cup...

Ford had no adjustment other than pinion bearing pre-load. The champ quick change guys, who your gears were made for, do have adjustments. The shim the carrier bearings on the carrier, they shim the side bells on the center section (they have two side bells, not just one like us), and they verify gear pattern. You may need to get creative with shimming.

here is a link that discuss setting up a champ axle:
pages 65 & 66: http://www.wintersperformance.com/20...%20Catalog.pdf

and another link with some champ axle tech tips:

Thank you for the pictures.

Hmmm...

I have that manual CSTempert... I will look at the other one... But After getting it together and oil in it... I ran it for a bit on the lift and it does not howl... does not seem to be as tight... The drive shaft is a lil tighter (too long) than I would like... but it was that way before I did all this... I will get the brakes bled this evening and take it out for a test drive and see how it drives and see if it howls or anything...

After Filling fluids and driving the truck for as bit ( 1 mile) the rear diff loosened up a bit... with no noises... Transmission shifts GREAT... Parking brake works GREAT... all in all it was a great project... AWESOME to see a survivor in such great shape...

The owner kept asking me if he should restore the truck and told him NO WAY!

Thank you everyone for all your help and advice while doing this truck... I think he wants to rewire the truck next...

CSTEMPERT.. You da man!

Can you post more pictures of that truck? I am a sucker for unrestored (or restored...) F-2 and F-3 pickups.

Also, I find it interesting that the license plate is hanging from the bracket the factory uses when you have only got one tail light, but the tail lights are attached to other brackets.

License Plate Bracket

I had to use the factory light and license plate bracket in conjunction with the new light brackets because the new brackets raise the lights. The license plate bracket would not work with the new ones because the license plate hit the side of the bed. I dont have many more pics... yet... but I think the owner is going to want the truck re wired soon... sooo I will prolly be back on here askin about wiring... and get more pics.
