[QUOTE=I am also interested in installing a T-98 in my 50 F-3. very interesting about welding material onto the mounting ears of the transmission. I suspect the the T-89 is longer than the T-19. My fear is if the T-98 body fits between the bell housing and the transmission crossmember. Also, about how much was added to the ears. Replies to this appreciated. thank you, patrick/QUOTE]

It's kind of hard to say. You almost have to measure and see where it wants to land.

The truck I worked on had the holes moved outward about 1/2" I also had to shim it about 5/8" up in the frame with a piece if solid bar it's all thru holes so not difficult

Often overlooked is the Tremec T176 4 speed. Because of that the price can be attractive. It was used by Ford, Jeep and GM. The Jeep version used the Ford bolt pattern. Advance Adapters may have the parts that you need (see http://www.advanceadapters.com/tech-vault/tremec-t176/). It doesn't have the trans mounted ebrake but you could easily solve that with a Ford 9" rear axle which would solve a few other problems as well.

Where are you? If it was in your profile you'd probably get more people that would speak up. I've got one that's mine and I have access to some more, maybe some from a 51-52.

I checked with Advance Adapters and they said that the T176 (Tremec) should work but they don't sell transmissions. I called Novak Conversions and Dave (dave@novakadapt.com) said that he would recommend the T19 (Borg Warner) as the T176 parts are getting hard to find. This would give us a very strong, fully synchronized 4 speed box with a top loading shifter that should not require modifications to the trans cover.

Are you planning on using your pickup as a heavy duty truck? If not, you don't need a four speed transmission.

If your willing to modify the mount and cross members anything will fit

If your looking for quickest easiest way
Option 1 is 3-spd HD option 2 is the Synchromesh

Any other options going to require crossmember mods, clutch linkage mods, adapting or fabricating and most likely cost as much as a good rebuilt one of the above

In addition to the two commonly cited options, the 3 speed heavy duty, and the synchromesh T98 there is another option that doesn't require you to cut your cross member. The light duty three speed was optional on earlier 3/4 and 1 ton Ford trucks and will bolt into an F-2 or F-3. It will not have the transmission mounted hand brake used by late 51 and 52 trucks. This is the same transmission as the popular 39 Ford three speed, but uses a different rear mount.

The truck is a Show quality driver with original patina... The owner wants it more drivable... the spur gear is hard to shift... and I will be changing the rear gear also.... and I would like it to still appear factory undernetah including the trans mounted parking brake...

The ebay transmission will not help. It looks like an early 60s passenger car transmission.

Swap T9 for T98 Input

Howdy,
I am currently installing a T98 synchro-silent 4 speed in my 1950 F4. Easy install to the engine bell housing once you find a proper 3 inch clutch bell housing. It got real complicated for me when I noticed the rear trans mainshaft bearing retainer (rear motor and trans mount) "foot" was broken off and missing. In process of machining and welding up the lower part of the mount as there seems to be no old T98 trannies around. Yes, the connecting shaft will have to be shortened or the intermediate driveshaft support will have to be moved aft and then the driveshaft would have to be shortened. Pick your machine shop project on that one.
