Old 360 into new 390

Got a 360 in my 1967 F100. Running pretty strong right now. Planning for a rebuild in the future. Plan on turning it into a 390. What exactly will I need other than a different crankshaft? What all can I add to the motor that could increase performance without affecting the engines reliability? Headers? Is a 4-barrel intake worth having? Aluminum intake? Etc.

Any info is much appreciated,

Ryan

360s suffer a sunken piston, and will be weak sister performers and thirsty as a result. However, they last a long time.

A Ford iron S or T 4bbl manifold and 600 CFM vacuum secondary 4bbl, plus headers, will wake it up pretty good. IMO, beyond that, it's time for:

390 crank and rods. (the 360 rod is longer) You can have 9-9.5 compression using 360 spec pistons, which are the same spec as late '60s car pistons. RV type cam, with springs to match, same manifold and headers. You can go with a Performer aluminum manifold, or really any swap meet or backyard dual plane aluminum manifold--they will be slightly better or the same as the stock iron and 60 lbs lighter to install.

OR you can go nuts:

Survival FE Engine Kits

As for fuel economy, you will never win any prizes, but improving the efficiency and raising compression will net you 300-350 horse with about the same mpgs as the stock 360.

ymmv, so don't track me down and kill me if this works differently for you........

Scroll through this forum and find hundreds of threads with links and actual build stories.

Good luck with you truck.

I can't add anything to what's already been said... good luck with your build

A hopped up 390 will still get better gas mileage than a 360, especially when you use a 600CFM 4bbl, as the primaries are smaller than the 2bbl and get better flow. If you can stay out of the secondaries

With nothing else different in my '74 highboy, going from a pretty bone-stock 360 at 10MPGs on the highway (on a good day) to an almost 11:1 390 with a 292/292 cam (adv) and a Holley 750, it went to over 13 under the same conditions. Not bad for what amounted to a brick wall going 65MPH ...
