perforated headliner

What is the advantages or disadvantages of perforated headliners? Not a huge fan of the holes unless it actually helps with noise or something. Thanks again for the help!

I bought GT mat off of Ebay for my truck (haven't installed it yet but anything to deaden the sound and reduce the heat is desirable. These old trucks were rugged but austere. It's hard to fault a tailgate that still works fine after 50 years of use (and abuse).

I'd guess there's a reason for the perforations, or they wouldn't exist in just about every vinyl or hardboard headliner. But where you don't see them is in breathable fabrics. My stab at it is that they keep condensation from accumulating, running down the sides, staining the fabric and, maybe, rusting the roof.
