transmission gap

I have a 75 300 engine that had a manual transmission. I removed the transmission and am trying to put in a C6 out of a 78 that had a 300. It seemed it should be an easy swap. I have put the transmission in and I have about a .25 inch gap between the engine block and bell housing that I can't get to close. This set up is in a 65 SWB if that makes a difference.

Did you remove the pilot bushing from the end of the crankshaft?

It seems to be. I see it on and slowly turned it until it set further back. The torque converter doesn't sick out past the rim of the bell housing.

The C6 torque converter; when installed, should drop in 2 notches. And will be below the rim of the bell housing about a quarter of an inch.
And as asked above; did you remove the pilot bushing?

You gentlemen are correct, somewhere along the line I forgot to remove the pilot bushing. Time to take it apart and start over.

It is amazing how well everything goes back together when you don't have extra pieces in the way. I was able to remove the pilot bearing and everything looks good. I tried to remove the bearing with a trick I saw on YouTube by filling the center hole with wet paper and pounding it out. That did not work. I guess the bearing in the video was not in as many years as mine. Then I went to the local parts store and barrows the proper tools, 6 slides on the slide hammer and I was in business. Thanks for the assist from the forum.

fill the cavity behind the pilot bushing with grease, fill it really full. find a solid piece of rod or wooden dowel that just fits thru the bushing, insert it & rap it hard with a hammer. the pilot bushing will pop out.

Transmission is in, just bolted on the starter and now need to run some cooler lines. It is slow going because I only get one day a weekend and maybe an hour or so after work on some nights but I am enjoying working on this truck.
