DT360 Swap advice

Not sure, if im in the right category here, if not please advice..

I am playing with the Idea of gathering Parts for an Engine Swap, vs re building eventually my 7.3.
I do not want to go with the Cummins at all. My engine of choice is the Detroit Dt360 due to reliability and easy performance mods.. plus no electronics . I have seen some posts here and there , but nothing as to a good write up in regards to installing one of those into an OBS. I am particular interested in the way the engine is mounted, how to overcome electrical issues, to keep the dash original and what transmission to use.
As for the Transmission i definately want a manual, but am curious about the Eaton Road Ranger 10-speed, or a eaton 9 speed.. I do not want to keep the ZF at this point and like to use more than 5 gears.
One thing to consider is that i want to keep the needed modifications on the truck/ body itself to a minimum.

One additional question would be in regards to driveability: the truck is a daily driver and will also be used to haul my camper. what fuel milage can i expect on the DT360 at highway speed ?

thanks for all advice.

I think you should drive a truck with a 9 or 10 speed before you put one in. For one they are HUGE compared to the zf5, and shifting 4 times before you get through an intersection gets old real fast.

Stefan, this is just food for thought, but what about staying with a ZF5 and putting an overdrive (or underdrive) unit behind it so you can split the gears? That would essentially give you 10 forward gears when you want them and when you don't you can just leave it alone and have a 5 speed.

The eaton 10 speed are massive.... I'm not sure if you could even fit it in the frame rails.... much less fashion up a good mount to hold the thing up.... the engine mounts with heavy duty trucks use a front mount that hold the engine down and 2 more mounts on the flywheel housing that acts like a cradle that supports both the engine and transmission, some have an additional spring bracket on the top of the transmission that acts like a spring against the top of the frame.

Like tom said. a DT360 is a INTERNATIONAL engine from INTERNATIONAL trucks used from the mid 80s till 93. Highest HP stock was 185HP and that was Aftercooled(also known as intercooled)

They came with Allison autos and typically the 6 speed manual
I am putting DT360 and ZF6 into my 86 to keep it mechanical but actually get out of its own way and NOT use a cummins

Here is one just below you post on PSN. he put DT360 into his F450http://www.powerstrokenation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347546

Is the 360 the same physical size as the 466?

About 6" shorter. That means no need to dog house the firewall.
The DT360 is about the same size as a 5.9 cummins. Remember, they are both 360cid straight 6s. Just the DT is Far superior to a cummins in EVERY way except no mid engine mounts

Ah, makes sense. I was just thinking if the 360 was from the same family as the 466 and it was the same size, I would much rather go for the 466. I have two of them in two different trucks and they just keep going and going and going and going.

If he goes with a 10 speed he might as well go 466 since there won't be much of a firewall or floor left after the 10 is in. Lol

Do you realize the DT360s STOCK bottom end will HOLD 2000hp!! Yes 2000 hp, it has wet sleeves and IIRC 6 bolt main caps. Don't think of it as a Junk cummins, think of it as a 466 just smallMy buddy has one in his 666IH tractor. BLOWs everything away in his class. Has to make a set of wheelie bars as skis to ride going down the track. All it has ia s HX40 turbo and a built A pump putting out approx. 500cc of fuel. his 966 with a 466 in it doesnt hold candle to it

Oh I wasn't saying anything negative about the 360, I just couldn't figure out why everybody was after the 360 instead of the 466, but that was before I found out it was physically smaller. If it was the same as the 466, you know how the saying goes, no replacement for displacement. From what I have read bout the 466 is that it can handle tons of power as well.

The reason people want the 360 over the 466 is it will FIT into a pickup. Cant say the same for a 466.

And 2000hp, I have yet to meet anyone that needs more than that, or even half that
