So I saw a of photo of this truck on the internet. I think it is a 1963 Ford F-100 but none of the ones I've looked at on eBay look similar to this one with the sidestep and body style. Does anyone know the year and model of this truck or have any suggestions. I'm in the market for an old truck like this and am in love with this one.

 

That's a Flairside bed. One of the bed styles available in those years. The rest of the body style (cab) looks pretty normal to me, so not sure what you are seeing. Good looking truck. Seems to display a 1963 year plate on the back. I believe the grill is 1963, too, but I don't have my info in front of me here.

If you are internet searching for pics of a Ford like this, also try searching for the words Ford Flareside or Ford flare side. In Google images, you get different results each way. I think it's also commonly called a step side or stepside, tho that's a Chevy term.

If you find a set of those his and hers Teddy Bear sweaters for sale, grab 'em quick. You might also search Ted E Bear. That vintage photo is cool. Even has a flag. Notice there was no apple pie, which was a Chevy item, I believe. Looks like the art director airbrushed out one of the tailgate chains?

 

That body style is 61-66. F100 or F250.


There are four varieties:


1. 61-63 has the pre-61 bed, known in these circles as the wrongbed.


2. 61-63 also came as unibody, the cab and bed being a one piece body.


3. 64-66 had an updated bed known as the styleside.


4. 61-66 could be had with a step or as Ford calls it a flare bed.


The 61-64 trucks had a straight axle carried over from previous years. The 65+ trucks went to twin I beam.


It is more difficult to add ps. pb, at to the straight axle trucks. The 65+ twin I beam trucks shared most suspension components with the trucks made up to 79.


There are many differences in the 61-64 and 65-66 variations when you get into 2wd 4wd 1/2 ton 3/4 ton.


I suggest lots of reading.

Do you think it says 1963 on the license plate for a reason? LOL

 

It would be difficult to find that particular truck.

 

Do you know if all the flares were short bed, or was there also a long bed version?

 

It could be had in a 8ft long bed as well. I think there was also a 9ft bed available, but I have never seen one of them.


Some trucks had the cutout in the left fender for the spare, some didn't, I don't know why.

 

65 was a big year for changes. All the engine options changed, on 2wd the front suspension went from leaf to coil springs, steering changed, front track width changed, the cab steps were deleted on 2wd.


Many people like the 65-66 best because of those changes, they consider the trucks more drivable and easier to upgrade.


The 65-66 trucks had a 240/300 or a 352. It is easy to drop in a 302/351 or a newer 300 or upgrade to a 360/390/428.


I would have preferred a 65/66 myself, but I went with the best condition truck I could find for the money, that happened to be a 64.

If you're looking to buy one of these, I'd strongly encourage you to keep an eye on Vintage Wheels' website. They're kind of like using cartempest, but smarter and friendly (though it doesn't search Craigslist). It's also a nice way to see what others have done for their vehicle, and get ideas for your own build.

It is one of the 3 body styles which was available in '63. It appears to be a restoration, however it was not restored to factory specs Watch out, know your vehicle before purchasing! The '61-'66 era is the most changed era in Ford pickup history. Almost every year had significant changes that will effect the interchange ability of parts year to year.
