1999 5.4 V8 coolant leak.
My truck is leaking behind the engine. There is not any coolant on top of the engine. It's leaking above the transmission and and running down the passage sides. Are there any hoses that could be leaking behind. Sometimes it leaks a lot other times it doesn't leak at all. The shop thinks it's a freeze plug but wouldn't it be leaking more if it was? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

here are a couple ideas. The intake manifold has a cross over pipe bolted to the bottom. That can leak and fill the VEE of the motor with antirfreeze. Normally you will get some spray up toward the injectors also....... after the manifold is removed, you can see a steel water line laying down in the VEE of the motor. Mine was OK, but that is a potential spot.

I thought that I was leaking in the back somewhere, too. But it turned out to be the infamous crossover tube leak. I pulled my intake and actually was going to fill it with epoxy and fiberglass mat, but I don't have the time to do it now. Looked at the Dorman part that everybody sells, but didn't like the thought of going from pressed-in, threaded inserts to plastic holes and sheetmetal screws. Did some reading and it looks like for the '02 and newer manifolds, Dupont used a different formulation for the nylon and it's supposed to be tougher. I don't recall seeing many, if any, threads about the newer manifolds failing, so I ordered a used one off of ebay. Time will tell if it was a wise decision.
Anyway, look closely along the edge of the manifold for coolant running down the head to the back. Again, mine was running down the head to the back and then dripping off of the back of the motor, too.
View through the wheelwell of the right side of the bell housing.

It's hard to believe that with all the aftermarket intakes for the mod motors in Crown Vics and Mustangs, nobody seems to make anything for the trucks. I think if I had the time, I would actually fab up a sheetmetal manifold for mine, trying to keep as much of the original runner length and cross-section the same. Maybe someday...
