Defroster won't drefrost a thing!

When my windshield gets all fogged up and I turn on the defroster it doesnt do anything but clear up a little 5 inch circle at the bottom of the center of the windshield. Does anybody know why its not working?

Thanks, John

Sounds like your system isn't pushing all of the air through the defrost vents. Do you have air coming out the floor vents or the dash vents? If not, go check out the other active thread on cleaning out the cowl and heater/AC core.

It's also possible there is some debris in the defrost ductwork, old pencils, paper, etc.

The blower is working a just replaced it last winter thinking it might fix the problem but it didnt. I can feel heat up by the windshield but just no current or breeze how ever u want to say it lol. My dad says i might have vaccum leak on the selecter controls that open the vents. Could this be the problem?

Thanks, John

A vacuum leak will cause the system to default to defrost.
This is not your problem.

A pencil can get down in there and jam one of the doors open or closed...

The heater core or AC evaporator (if you have it) can be blocked with leaves and debris from the cowl on the back side.
This will cause a low flow problem.

Gotta say, my defroster is working great the past few days.

Jim is right - as always. You need to clean things out. The way I did it was to remove the blower motor and vacuumed out the leaves. But others have had to remove the cowl and the plates in the kick panels to get it all. This is the thread I mentioned.

Does the blower put out strong air when the setting is on dash or floor?

Sounds like there are lots of leaves or something plugging things. Otherwise you would have a lot of air coming out of the defrost vents since you don't have any air going anywhere else.

I find it hard to imagine taking the A/C out of a vehicle in Texas!

But then, while I live in a part of the country where we see from zero to one hundred, it doesn't usually stay at or beyond the extremes for more than a week straight.

Have you tried it with the recirc door open?
(is there a setting for "Max AC"?)

I took the A/C out because i cant stand not being able to see my engine. That is why new fuel injection engines drive me nuts! Along with the fact that i cant work on it in my own driveway. My A/C selector doesnt have a circulation button deal. Just has the slider for temp, fan, and A/C, defrosters, vent, mix, floor. Do you know what the little white tube that runs under the dash intp the selector board does? Mine is crumpled and falling apart.

Thanks, John

Yeah, It's the vacuum source to operate the various flaps with factory air.
Like I said, default is defrost.

This is why some people complain that the defrost comes on while climbing hills and other times of full throttle under load.
