The Ford Explorer was introduced back in 1990 as body on frame SUV and it relied on that format through the 2010 model year, before being replaced by the new unibody Explorer for 2011.

I prefer the body on frame mainly because it gives additional ground clearance. I also like the older models for the more rugged look they have. The newer unibody styles look too much like a car. If I wanted that I would buy a Ford Edge or one of the Ford cars.

 

I've had a 95 and now an 02, if that says anything. The 2011+ should not have been called the Explorer, it has nothing in common with the actual ones. But then, Nissan did the same with the Pathfinder.

 

I prefer the 1990-1994. Simplist and most reliable.. I do like the looks of the new ones, not the price though. All the electronic stuff on new vehicles worry me for longevity

 

I just don't like the TTB system. The 95+ had a true IFS, and much better road manners not to mention tire life. The TTB setup in full size trucks was borderline, but in the compacts it just swung the tires around too much.
