Oil Cooler OOOOOORings

Well noticed some oil on the frame today. Running down the frame from the driver side. Its dripping from both ends of the oil cooler on the the crossmember part of the frame where it runs under the pan.

So getting ready to refresh my memory and search for the oil cooler oring thread and read up.

It looks in good shape.... very minimal rust if any.

If anyone has any tips, tricks, suggestions, or anything good to replace or do while its out let me know please.

I've had an oil cooler rebuild kit in my center console for the past three years.
No leaks yet, but I know it's a matter of time.

A buddy of mine in Orlando just fixed his oil cooler & I remember him saying that he bolted the front peice to the engine & then used a prybar on the exhaust manifold to pop it all back together.
He said he seen it in a Youtube video.

I don't think I would try that, the front bolts to the front cover and I wouldn't want to risk breaking the aluminum and having to pull the motor to replace the front cover.

Use a rachet strap with it out to compress the entire unit together outside the truck. Then bolt it in.

That's a much better idea, & I suggested that to him.
I didn't realize that the front mounted to the front cover. I just remember him telling me on the phone what he did.
NOT a good idea.

Searched and Searched

Found the write up by Cody but the images had been deleted and was looking for something a little more in depth.

Anyone have the write up or a link to one ???? IT would be most helpful !!!!

Oh and FYI

Im about 3000 mi before my oil change

And i just installed a water pump last weekend with new CAT ELC.......

I honestly have never messed with the oil cooler ever. I read a writeup like 3 years back on it and now can't find it.

I can't remember what all is involved as far as fluids etc go.

IDK about that

I did mine this year just like the guy on the video & I was really surprised at how easy it all went back together. JMHO but I believe if you grease up the o-rings & ends when you get to the point of prying the tube into the front you can get a pretty straight push when prying against the manifold & it doesn't take much pressure at all to get the tube home. I don't believe I'll ever fool with the front piece unless I was sure the gasket between it & the front cover was leaking.

Like I said I was stressing pretty good about doing it the way the vid guy did but I was really pleased at how well it worked out, JMO so take it for what it's worth lol

I pulled the oil cooler out replaced the o rings and put it back in. I just pushed everything back together by hand put a block of wood on the ground and pushed down. If I recall correctly one of the front bolts was a little challenging but not impossible. I wasn't able to torque it so I had to use the force to feel the 18 lbs/ft. It wasn't oil change easy but it wasn't hard either. I replaced the oil pump and installed the 6.0 cooler the same day the hardest job was the 6.0 cooler.

You do not need to drain the oil but the filter needs removed, so I would suggest waiting for your next oil change. I did this two years ago, it's not difficult at all. I used Cody's instructions but the rite-up on Guzzle's web-site is just as good.

I thought I did a bit of a write-up on this, but not detailed like Cody. I followed his instructions and took pictures along the way.

I drained the oil because I was doing the oil pump at the same time.

Mine started leaking Saturday morning. I switched to ELC a couple months ago, and two weeks later the water pump went out. Now I need to drain the coolant again to fix the oil cooler. Anyone know how much coolant will drain when doing this repair? I don't want to buy four gallons of concentrate if I won't need all four gallons.

I saved my old coolant and had to add 1/2 gallon at most.
