Edelbrock Endurashine....

I just picked up an Edelbrock carb that the PO screwed up when attempting to rebuild it. The carb has the Endurashine coating but the PO used some sort of carb cleaning chemical on it which lifted some of the Endurashine coating.

Here's my question...has anybody INTENTIONALLY removed Endurashine from an Edelbrock product? I won't put you on the spot to "fess up" to an "UN"intentional removal, so if you did that then let us know how that happened in a way that appeared intentional. We promise not to give you any grief about it...well, I won't laugh but others may.

Here's where I am headed with this...I intend to rebuild the carb, and I would like to play around with restoring the chrome-like finish, but I need to get the carb down to clean aluminum first. I am using a POR15 prduct called Glisten-PC on other polished metal and I think that it will be well-suited to coating this carb, I just need to get the carb prepped first.

Purple Power cleaner(TSP?) I soaked mine in it for a rebuild. Sure took the finish off.....not sure if its all the way to bare metal or not.
Is the finish an anodizing? Oven cleaner is supposed to work on that. Dunno if it affects the base metal though....

Enduroshine is a three part sprayed on finish. Dark base, aluminumized color coat, followed by a clear top coat. I believe that the clear is a paint that is similar to Glisten PC...very durable and impervious to many chemicals. I have tried carb cleaner, acetone, lacquer thinner, brake cleaner...I have not tried Purple Power yet nor have I tried paint stripper but as soon as I have time to work on it I intend to try both. Each time I try something and it fails to even soften the clear coat I laugh to myself thinking that if I wasn't trying to remove it then it would have fallen off on its own.

Brake fluid seems to remove even the best paints when you spill it??

Chuck, why not give Edelbrock a call and ask what they recommend?

After you try all of the solvents, maybe it's time for the blast cabinet?

I have...they think that I am nuts. They say that I should buy a NEW carb and set aside all this foolishness about trying to copy their process.

Yep, that's the idea...they look great and will take a beating under "normal" conditions. I just got a bucket of Berryman's Chemtool so I am going to test a piece today...I think that this may be what the PO used when he destroyed the finish in the first place.

Here is the engine from my 56 F100 when I was first putting it together...the carb and intake are both coated with Endurashine.

No, that is a 302 roller engine (1992 Mustang?) w/Vintage Air Frontrunner accessory package. I just built another SBF engine for my 40 Ford coupe that is a 351W (1969 build date, 1970 Torino/Fairlane car) that is configured in much the same way only it has Procomp heads and no Endurashine intake/carb. Here is a pic of that engine...

That looks really nice Charlie. I have a 351 from a 83 F150 and C6 transmission, it only has a 2bbl carb on it. Don't think it's much of a power house but there is only 50,000 miles on it and I knew the guy who owned it. I know very little about these Ford engines but would like to keep this build all Ford and don't want to break the bank so the wife won't wring my neck, lol

My intitial attempts at breaking the Endurashine coating free of this carburetor were less than successful...lacquer thinner, brake cleaner, carb cleaner, all proved to be too weak for the task. I ordered a can of Berryman's Chem-Dip, in a past life this used to be the bomb when it came to removing virtually anything, including my skin. Attached are a couple of photos of the choke housing from this carb that I placed in a brand new can of Berryman's last night. It sat for 14 hours and the Endurashine has not budged a bit. There is one area where the dark basecoat is showing through but that is the work of the PO and not the result of any of my efforts. When I bought the intake and carb that were coated with the Endurashine I made a mental note to take it very easy with these parts as I did not want to damage the finish...this experiment has made a believer of me in the durability of this coating however.

Next step will be to apply my Kosmic Chrome finish with a top coating of Glisten PC and then I will see if I can duplicate Edelbrock's process.

I thought Endurashine was a powder coat finish?
