I read here a lot about recycling the key for the glow plugs. My understanding is that when you turn your key on the glow plugs will stay on for two minutes before they shut off. The dash light will come on but it will go out in just a few seconds, it is independent of the glow plugs. So, if you recycle the key only after a few seconds (after the light goes out), why not just leave the key on and let the glow plugs continue heating up?
They'll activate for 0-120 seconds, depending on oil temperature and barometric pressure. Some people wire an in-cab indicator light to the output terminal of the relay so they can tell at a glance if the glow plugs are powered or not. With a cold engine, I usually just wait until I hear the fuel pump shut off, then crank the starter. And yes, the dash light is independent.
You are correct in all of it. And I always thought to my self about cycling the key, as maybe I was missing something. Mine stays on for a good minute or two without cycling. I don't cycle the key, I just wait a good 30 to 60 seconds when really cold.
True glow plugs are on 1.5 to 2 min even after dummy gp light goes out. Bet to add led light to know for sure when it goes off. If you ever need to replace only use ford ZD - 11 F4TZ-12A342-BA glow plug.
