1990 F150 VS mustang fuel pump

I have a 1990 F150 4x4 with 302. It does not have duel tanks. I need to upgrade the fuel pump to at least 155lph, Because of modifactions done to the engine. I am now wanting to supercharge it, I have Paxton sn92 unit. I have changed the fuel pressure regulator to an adjustible one, and have a FMU unit also. My QUESTION, IS THE INTANK MUSTANG FUEL PUMP THE SAME AS THE FUEL PUMP ON THE F150 TRUCK. Or does anyone know where I can get one for the truck. Thanks

I would suggest going to your local dealer or auto parts store and compare part numbers. There is a very good possibility that they are the same.

1990 F150 VS mustang fuel pump

I looked this over at work the other day, the answer is no. The older f-series used a short, fat pump. The newer style pump sits in a plastic housing. I pried the housing apart to see if the "guts" were the same. The pumps are similar, but just different enough to keep you from using mustang style pumps. I'm guessing your looking at higher output pumps for performance upgrades. Heres what made my mind up for me. The same pump for a 302 truck is the same pump used in the 460 trucks. The 460 has 24 lb. injectors stock I am told. Even out catalogs list the same pumps for regular F-150's and the lightnings from 93-96. If the stock F-series pump can support a the demands of a 460 CI engine with 24 lb. injectors, then surely it can feed a 351 with 19's. I am starting on a mild performance build for my truck. I am going to try to change out the pumps so I don't run into problems with weak 100,000 mile pumps. I think the stock ones will be fine as long as you get a quality brand for most applications. I suppose I'll find out if I'm right when I get my engine built.

1990 F150 VS mustang fuel pump

I have compared part numbers and are not the same but close in apperance. As for the suggestion about the fuel pump supporting the upgrades the paxton supercharger says to upgrade to at least 110 lph fuel pump. I ahve upgraded to 46psi but if i go to high on pressure I will lose volume. Thanks in advance for advice.

1990 F150 VS mustang fuel pump

They make a pump booster that some of the supercharged mustang crowd use so they don't have to tear into the tank. From what I understand it increases voltage to the pump to make it spin faster, increasing volume pumped. Your stock pump would have to be in good shape already and it would probably shorten the life of the pump. There is also an add on pump that goes in line that is a helper pump. I think the name brand is T-rex, but I'm not sure on that. I thought about this and what kind of problems dual tanks would create. I quess the helper pump mounted ahead of the selector valve would be the easiest because you would only switch which pump fed it when you switched tanks. The booster would either require two of them or some thought on how to wire it to switch between the pumps. Those more into street trucks may want to just use one tank so they don't haul around the weight of the tank and fuel, if they have a truck with dual tanks. I think Holley and some others make an inline external pump that will work with EFI that stands alone. You would have to take your stock pump out of the tank if it is not used. I have seen people add an external pump to vehicles that had a bad in tank pump to avoid dropping the tank. They found out they can't suck through a dead pump, and had to drop the tank anyway.
