lower radiator hose has stuff in it?!

I am replacing the thermostat in my 95 351w and noticed the lower rad hose has what feels like somthing in it? hard wise that is. This is located in the bend where the hose reconets to the rad. Can there be build up like minerals? too add to the story i am replacing the fairly new 1 month old thermo due to what i think is failer in the open position. I stoped with the new thermo incase it was debrie in the rad. Am i in for a new radiator or is there options.

Thanks guys!
