floor mounted automatic/ bench seat compatibility questions

56 f100. No motor or transmission yet. Undecided on the engine trans combo but know It will be automatic with floor shifter. In the meantime screwing around on craigslist [bad idea, I know] and found a nice bench seat. The seat is from a 73-77 El Camino but has a vintage look. Hoping my forum brothers with floor mounted autos could let me know where their shifters come out, what engine/trans combo they have, and where they measured from. I currently have the gas tank behind the seat. Thanks, Matt

Lots of variables to consider...what engine/trans are you considering? What type of shifter? The one in the photo above is a mechanical, that is one with an arm, others are cable operated. I have a cable type shifter which allows me more freedom on placement...it can mount anywhere within the reach of the cable.

If I had to commit right now I would say I will use a crate chevy 350 and 700r4. I can access both in new condition and fit my mechanical skillset. I was unaware of the mechanical/cable options. Thanks

A 49 is a bit different, but my SBC and 700R4 with floor Locar shift would not have worked with a bench seat. JMHO, unless someone has been there, done exactly what you propose, buy the seat after you have the engine and tranny positioned. .....Unless you get a real buy on it, of course.

If the bench fits, is one you really like, is in a color and material you want to use, is in good condition, and a smokin deal, buy it, put it away for safe keeping where varmints can't reach it. If later on you change your mind, you can always resell it. Stock El Camino parts in good condition are always going to be in demand.
On the other hand, Builds tend to take a lot longer than planned/anticipated, and seats are one of those things we tend to change our minds about as time into the build goes on. and aren't typically very expensive, except to reupholster.
