1986 fuel sending unit

I have a 1986 F150 with the 300 6cyl 1-barrel carburetor. Has anyone ever tried to find a new fuel sending unit for the 16 gallon side mount tank? I am having a hard time finding a replacement, and I am getting tired of continually tracking my miles to know when to fill up again. Is it possible to have the float fixed at a radiator shop?
Thanks, Alan

Talking 1986 fuel sending unit

Your better off than me! I just carry a 3 gallon jug in my tool box and use it when I run out. My odometer is broken as well. I found however, a new sending unit at advance auto for around $100.00, steep yes, but it beats being just out of range of a 3 gallon back-up!!

1986 fuel sending unit

I also went to Advance Auto Parts, they ordered a sending unit for me, but what actually got ordered was the gas tank not a sending unit! And they don't list one for my application, just a fuel injected version. So, I broke down and called one of my local Ford dealers parts department, and they had one...so, $113 later I will get to fix my problem this weekend!

Cool 1986 fuel sending unit

Holler back and let me know if you have any troubles with installation. I'm pretty tired of running out of gas myself, so by the end of the month I will be replacing mine as well. I have a FI 302, I wonder what could be different about the sending unit on your carburated 6. Same tank, same wires. Oh yeah, don't smoke while fixin' this one!!

1986 fuel sending unit

Most of the sending units I saw in the catalog for fuel injection are different than my non-fuelie one. They have the fuel pump on the sender in the tank!

Ahh, I see. I'm no mechanic, but I made sure some of my friends were!! Now if I could just get 'em to build me a 351. That will cost me about 6 cases of Bud Light and probobly a divorce!
