I've seen what a stock, HD Ford trans can hold up to in a work truck, all day every day, year after year.
I think with a few simple upgrades over factory oem stock, there's not much need for a $5k trans.
If I needed a new trans I'd probably go with a Ford HD trans, $2800, unlimited mileage for 3 years and warrantied at any Ford dealer, anywhere.

So one can still get a HD e4od from FoMoCo?

You can get a reman, but why would you when an HD Econo from John Woods is 100 dollars more and 100 times better built?

I have nothing against JW, but how can you say it's 100 times better built?
I highly doubt you have compared the HD Ford trans internals to one of his Econo builds.
I personally have not, I just don't care for statements like that.

Some people like the fact they can have their trans warrantied at ANY Ford dealer, anywhere, and not have to ship it 3000 miles back across the country IF something should go wrong with it. It is mechanical and things happen.
Personally I, as well as many customers I deal with, would go Ford before JW any day because of this.

I hear you. I have not compared the internals, but he has, and this time I will trust what he has to say since he has proven himself in that department and Ford, most assuredly, has not. What came out of my truck was a Reman HD E4OD. It was stamped on the front of the non-billet TC. It wasn't a bad trans other than the front and rear seals were blown out. So, the fact that it was a reman and my truck only has 215k miles on it tells me it had not been in there too entirely long.

I understand the warranty thing, but I'd never take my truck to another Ford dealer again anyway, so that part doesn't matter to me personally. And saying 100 times better was just a figurative, and not a literal comparison. I would say 5 times better? 10 times? I spent a day with JW at this shop and I didn't just sit while they replaced my unit. I asked a ton of questions and he showed me the internals he uses on his rebuilds, even the Econo HD, and they are far above the rest of the ball-peaned BS that exists out there, even in those $5-7k trans that big names are building. So yeah, 100 dollars more for even twice better built is worth it to me. But I know that I may have to ship IF something goes wrong and that's the chance I take on a better built unit.

Great feedback!
Jim, these stg2's rock! I really want to put the power they can make to the ground..
I'm getting there to be able to get an HD unit. I got some more parts off my donor 5spd truck sold, including the ZF5 I was going to use and the south bend clutch I couldn't return without a 20% restocking fee
I think I'm going to go for the EconoHD at this point with a big cooler. I have a good friend who upgraded her trans cooler at 12k miles after 4 stock trans (back when she bought it new in 96) and at 235k her truck/trans is going great. I think the heat really was a hurting factor as well. Already have a temp gauge for the new one.

I'm looking forward to the HD trans that will transfer the power to the back end of the truck I sure miss driving the beast... been driving the backup 78 f250 the past couple weeks.. it's getting expensive at 7MPG!!

Jim, would ford warranty the trans behind a engine that was not stock? I cant imagine if there was a set of stage two sticks and a chip installed that they would have any part of that?

Can't see the injectors or chip but if you have the upgraded turbo and IC pipes, that's a dead give away, LOL My bet, no warranty!!

I don't think that would be any concern of theirs, but I am not a Ford service writer so I can't say for sure, and we have not come across any warranty issues to deal with yet.
Put your chip on stock and tuck the switch under the dash and they generally would have no idea.

Oh it would be a concern alright...depending on whether they knew or not.
