Turbo Build advice/plans

Okay fellas I haven't been on in a long time but here's the deal. 1996 f150 4x4.. I've been saving $ for awhile now.. I have a really good speed shop in town and I want them to build me a beast.. I want to make her a TWIN turbo 347 stroker... I was gonna go the route of the same body style power stroke turbos and have them rebuilt.. But what do you guys think? Sleeper status? Any idea for a desktop dyno?

If I was gonna go all out on a build I wouldn't go with a turbo charged car motor. I'd be thinking 408 stroker or even better, a big block 521 with a cam and heads. Nothing like huge HP and torque all naturally aspirated. But that's just me...

Unless you have 5-figures saved up shelve the idea. A twin turbo will cost twice as much as a single plus you have to figure in the cost of a transmission, rear axle and front axle upgrade. We will ignore the cost of a custom tune for the time being.....

We all wish we had unlimited pocket depth for these kinds of builds. In 99% of the cases there is NOT enough money to do it.

You want to take a 4000+ pound 4X4 and run it down the 1/8th? If that's the case your gonna need somewhat of a deep pocket. Your gonna need a pretty powerful motor. 500ish horsepower at the wheels. This is where the money starts to add up. You will need some major tuning to take the computer that normally controls a 200hp engine and make it run a 500+ horsepower motor. This also means the fuel system will require some serious modifications. Then once the engine is all taken care of, the trans is up next. The stock trans will NOT handle anywhere near that much power stock so your gonna be looking at a full rebuild there and some tuning for it. Then once that's squared away the rear end will likely grenade itself the first time you try and launch the thing on the strip which means your looking and beefing up the rear axle. Like RLA said, this will easily put you into the five digit build range.... The real question here is how much do you have to spend and what are some realistic goals for this trucks build? I am not trying to sound like a downer but turning your truck into an 1/8th mile drag truck is just ridiculous.

There is a TV show about outlaw streetracing and drama, probably more the fake drama, but one of the guys has the "farm truck" that he races the others 2,000 HP cars.

If I remember right, its actually competitive, but only because they wedged a 10 thousand dollar stroker of some sort in it.

Okay let's put it in better terms... If I rebuild my motor, bore it out, 347 stroker kit, 1.7 rockers, long tubes, new pistons rods all those goodies, cam, the ford racing aluminum heads, not to mention uprgraded fuel rail and distributor and those goodies, maybe the edelbrock performer intake, and a buddy owns a tuning company.. what do you think that would put to the wheels? I plan on rebuilding the tranny, adding a shift kit and rebuilding the rear too, probably with 4.10 or 4.55 gears..

This is just my weekend toy, its not a dragster but me and a lot of buddies goto the local strip on weekends nothing serious...

We have 13 1st gen lightnings in the family and I would light to be able to eat one of them up.. My truck only weighs 3900lbs too I took her to Jenny Craig and fed her slimfast

Your gonna waste your money on that 302 in my opinion.

After all that's done you will only want more~!

Junk the 302 and get some more displacement like the previous person said.

Then plop a belt driven Blower on it! Muhahaha~!

Just my opinion...

But after all that is one why not just invest in a car?? Old fox body or something

swap the 302 to a 351 then stroke it to a 427. That is what I want to do to my 92... with a 5.0
