98 f150 4x4

I have a 98 f150 4x4 automatic 4.6 litre with the 4r70w transmission. Can anyone tell me what year and type of transmission are compatible and what I would have to change to make them work. Thanks

i am assuming you have an issue with your trans and looking to replace, i am in the same boat. i have looked within a decent radius of where i am. i am inches away from rebuilding mine myself, since the cost of rebuild will be around $400 and all i can find used are trans with 150-200k on them. In my case i swapped in a 5.4l so i am looking for a 99+ 4r70w. every 97-98 5.4l i found had the e40d, which alike the 4r100 will not fit without modification. im not sure on trannys from explorers and such, but i would definitely look for one that came from a 4.6 or a 5.4. the 4r70w was beefed up a touch for the 5.4l but as many others will state the 4.6l version can handle it. one big thing to look for is make sure it is 4wd. a 2wd trans will require a tear down to be converted. there are alot of tans that are compatible, expeditions e150's. if you are using craigslist, i like to ask for them to take a picture of the door tag to eliminate the chance they don't know what they have, and use this page to decipher. http://www.fordf150.net/howto/decode.php

as it states item 10 you are looking for tr code U. i had someone tell me their truck had a 4r70w, their door tag showed E. hope it helps!!!

I bought it off of a guy and I was having to Rev the engine quite a bit for it to finally start to move in drive and it would also slip some while in gear. He told me it needed a sensor but I'm assuming it needs a whole new transmission and with so many miles on the motor I don't want to buy a rebuilt or new one I just want the cheapest alternative that will work
