Radiator Transmission Cooler Lines

Hey all, I'm working on our 2001 7.3 Excursion. The transmission cooler lines began leaking at one of the last bends before going into the radiator. No stores seem to carry those lines in stock, and it looks like a simple piece to make with some 3/8ths line. I bent the line, flared the ends, then noticed that on the old lines, the piece that threads into the radiator has an extension on the end. It looks like a normal flared fitting: a hex area, a threaded area, but then it has a 1/4 inch or so of smooth area that extends out from the threads and is actually what contacts the tube flare. The standard brake line fittings do not have this, and look like they will run out of threaded area long before the tube flare is actually in contact with the fitting. Here is a stock photo to go along with my horrible description:

A standard fitting looking like this:

What fitting is this (top image), and where can I get it? Are there any alternatives? Or must this be used? I keep searching, but have come up empty handed. I found brief mention that you can unscrew the metal fittings from the plastic radiator end tank, is this true? If so, can you then use whatever fitting you wish?

Would this be better asked in the SuperDuty forum instead of the Excursion forum? I'm guessing it's all the same, and there's even more traffic over there.

Ford made the flared fittings ⅜" longer and only Ford manufacturers make them (to my knowledge)

The part number is YL1Z7D273BA and the proper name is "Ford Connector Oil Tube". Only the Stealership, EBay and a few truck centers have them for $20-35 each.

As for the trans oil lines, I have bought the trans oil supply line with the deep flared tube end from Autozone for $30. Hope this helps.

Great info! Thank you. Too bad they couldn't use standard fittings.

To clarify, this is the part that screws into the radiator end tank? Then the cooler line with the 3/8th's extra long inverted nut screws into this (Shown in the first picture of my original post)?

Correct.

You can attempt to GENTLY remove that Ford fitting that goes into the oil to water cooler in the bottom of your radiator (as I did) and use a standard fitting in it's place, but I wouldn't recommend it. The threads on those fittings are sealed from the factory with a liquid thread sealant and you could damage the radiator trying to remove it.

Here is the Autozone trans oil supply line that is equipped with the special deep tube flare end in your 1st picture:

if you're making your own lines couldn't you just cut off the factory threaded piece from the old line and slip it onto your new line before flaring it?

That's precisely what I ended up doing. The line and fitting were so rusted that upon removal, the line just twisted off right at the end of the fitting. So I really wanted to replace the line and fitting. Seeing as this was easier said than done, I was able to use an extractor bit to extricate the remaining line from the fitting. After some cleanup, the fitting slid right over the new 3/8th's line. I put a double flare on it and called it good.
