Dire Straights

One of my good friends has a 2006 F250 crew cab dualy. About two days ago he was driving around the city when he smelled coolant he then pulled over pop the hood and saw what basically looked like a Wendy's Frosty coming out of the D gas bottle. With no other symptoms besides smelling the coolant in seeing the frosty the truck drove fine it didn't defuel my question is what failed? Oil cooler or egr. The truck bone stock.

I was leaning towards egr cooler. Time to park the truck nose down on a hill and pull the egr valve and inspect inside. Blown oil cooler equals oil in coolant. Plugged oil cooler equals blown egr cooler with a chance of hydrolocking the motor which is no bueno. When he said Wendys Frosty was it by any chance a chocolate one.

Blown oil cooler definitely. I personally would change the oil and egr coolers, flush with a good none sudsing detergent and then change the rubber hoses. Re-flush and put in new coolant. The flushing, once an oil cooler ruptures, is a very tedious and time consuming job. Give Mr. Nobody the cigar and brass ring.

I have never had to do it but it seems like I've read here that Cascade is the preferred detergent. Will someone with the practical experience please chime in. Perhaps Cheezit or M.Chance are lurking?

This might sound like a dumb question but should he replace the oil cooler pre or post flush?

If it's leaking oil it won't do any good to flush it with the old one in.

That's what I was thinking. Now is he gonna risk clogging the new oil cooler flushing the rest of the frosty out? Because I have a semi-good oil cooler from when I put my BPD oil cooler on. I know it's a lot of work but at least he could flush his system clean without risking clogging a brand new cooler.

That would be the ideal way to do if you have time for the extra work.
