Well in the 97-03 vintage range, or generation, there is no cam phasers to worry about. This range/ generation all had 2 valves per cylinder ( aka 2v). Also In this generation there was some head redesigns , so after 1999-2000? er so FoMoCo came out with the "PI" heads (Performance Inhanced or Improved), which boosted power output. and quickly became the sought after upgrade. last head redesign was in 03' with thicker thread area for the spark plugs.

The cam phasers that you hear/read so much about didn't come about until the next generation (04'-08') & to current production, if I'm not mistaken. These are all 3 valve per cylinder (3v) engines. they tend to be more more of a issue in the early production engines 04-06. but that said, I'm sure there are those in later units (07-12), that also have phaser issues just not so prevalent. In 05' there is the extended injector customer satisfaction warranty/recall which added to the phaser mix.

I have heard this issue in the 2004 and 2005 years.

They get a misfire and it never goes away - no matter how much money you throw at it.

Phasers were supposedly fixed in '09 but mine still makes some of the noises and I've had it stumble when idling for several minutes a few times. It doesn't make the diesel noise at warm idle all the time like I have heard on a lot of the pre '09s with the issues.

I really like the 02-03, either 4.6 or 5.4. It was the last run of those and most issue and improvements were made before the 3V kicked in. You're still going to get the rotted manifold studs....some stuff like that...but in general an 02 or 03 4x4 is still one heck of truck. Last year I needed to replace my 98 F150 work truck. I looked at 06-08, but really wanted a 02-03 Fx4. Found a 02 Fx4 with high miles but still looked like new so bought that. Man I really like that truck.
