Hi all. hope this is posted in correct place. Looking for an Ex to help satisfy mid-life crisis. 4x4 Pref a 7.3. Finding prices all over the board in Tx. What is considered "high mileage" for these trucks? Not finding strong correlation between the blue/black/nada books and asking prices (asking usually 3k-5k above dealer retail). I'm trying to make sense of it. if there happens to be one with 200+k miles, the engine is ok (no blow-by, smoke, unsettling clunking), drive train, suspension appear sound, any clue what price range is "normal" for 2001, 2002? What's your experience? Many thanks.

 

High mileage is usually: number of years X 15,000 miles per, a MY 2002 would be 195,000 miles ~

High mileage on a diesel EX would probably be over 400,000. One of our esteemed moderators has a 2WD 7.3 with over 400,000 but he keeps it maintained.

Texas is different...high mileage in TX may be over 20,000 miles per year?

I have seen $9,000 - $16,000 for what you are describing.

Whereabouts are you in our great state? Being a Texan myself, I know where you're coming from on higher mileage vehicles around here. Just keep in mind our state is huge, and most diesels are used for long-haul applications. If it's predominately highway mileage I wouldn't pay as much mind as mainly city miles.

Mileage was discussed here not too long ago, the majority of us agreed that a higher mileage vehicle that's been maintained properly is a far better purchase than one with much lower mileage that was neglected, or owned by someone who only serviced it when the CEL came on.

 

Thanks MecDac and Krazee...FTW area. CarFax has spotty records on mx, some owners took to Ford, others ?? I haven't driven up to look at it yet, just doing leg work. Other than mileage, this one may have higher WAF rating than the others I've looked at. Thanks again.

 

Dealer asking prices on popular models like a diesel Ex 7.3 are always going to be above KBB unless there are issues with the truck. If it's un-modded or well documented care even modded then you're probably going to have to pay the premium from any dealer. If dealing with a private sale the best situation would be standard records of maintenance/care/etc. A thorough inspection in either case should reveal whether the vehicle is honest or not.

Dallas/FtWorth area isn't tough terrain compared to places like Big Bend, so if the truck stayed in that region you're probably looking at over-road mileage. I would expect Texas avg mileage to be 20K-25K/yr for an average Ex and 35K/yr or more for a working Ex.

People who haven't lived in Texas or the region have no inkling of mileage necessary to get anywhere. I lived in Big Sandy/Tyler region for a while and trips to DFW were common. Of course if anyone takes a drive across to El Paso they might just start to understand why mileage is a far different calculation in Texas..

 

Hahahaha yep, I used to live in Haslet (NW of Fort Worth) and I was lucky that my commute to work was only 25 miles, but if I needed to get to the store, it was 20 miles round trip just to get to the junky Wal Mart. I easily put 18,000 miles per year on my car.

When I was a kid, the family and I would go on road trip vacations sometimes. I remember one trip was to Disney World (from San Diego), and it took us one day to get to Texas, one day to get across Texas, and one day to get to Orlando.

 

Thanks again all....found an interesting one. 223k+ miles but has NAM branded title from first owner. Based on CARFAX, appears they drove around the world at the equator and then some in the first 15 months....31K. That was reported as inaccurate mileage. Haven't put eyes on it yet.
Question: Assuming they did not really drive 31K in 15 mos, is there a fault mode in the odometer that could make it mess up? I'm trying to figure out why some would roll fwd miles....(and wipe out their warranty). Most of the odometer issues I've seen are the analog ones that broke and show lower than actual miles anymore. Sir? LOL. While I am male, I never think of myself as "sir", though if you're a native Texan, I understand the polite respectful form of address.

 

I used to commute 75 miles each way daily (although not in an Ex!) and used to log 30-35k miles annually.....

 

Currently commuting daily 82 miles round trip, I cannot imagine doing 150 good God. 82 miles of rush hour is enough! Thankfully the X has excellent traffic presence and authority.

 

So in context of your long distance commuter replies, I will dial back my concern regarding 30K + in 1.5 years....Don't envy you guys. Regardless, if the truck is in good shape I'll shell out for someone to look at it (I'd like to have the compression checked and I don't have the kit)....only problem is that the guy I trust to check it out is not local to the truck. Thanks for the feedback.

 

Put eyes on the Ex. beautiful interior, ran well. Unfortunately serious body rust and some frame rust that did not look healthy. Back to looking. Thanks for all your input.

 

Solid choice. I'll take a shody interior with a rust free chassis and body any day. Body work isn't cheap, and interior pieces are plentiful in part yards and part rigs.
