NP435/NP205 gear oil ? paint color ?

so i pulled my trans/transfer case assembly out today( to fix my previously mentioned flywheel issues) i drained them both and the fluid was na-a-asty! im gonna reseal both of them with a new gasket/seal kit from napa. the trans,i will remove the PTO cover and clean the trans case bottom as best as possible with brake clean and a rag. i know they both take 90w140 gear oil but what has anybody out there used thats worth a dang ? i will stay away from Sta-lube but cant afford royal purple.

also, what color were they brand new or did Ford leave them natural ?

thanks guys-Chris

the np435 takes 50w oil or an 80-90 and I think a lot just run a 75-140w.
But I'm clueless and that is just what I read online.

Im not sure if it is factory but both of mine look to be natural and unpainted.

As far as oil goes, I was told to use whatever you put in the diff's. If I remember right the Hanes manual calls for some weight of SAE oil that is no longer on the shelf.

Weren't they a reddish color from the factory (same color as the coating on the inside)?

When divorced, I run 80w-90 and put in a quart of 5w-30 or hydraulic oil (or even ATF) to thin it down.

When married, I run what ever the tranny has so it doesn't matter as much if they decide they want to swap spit.

As others have said, 80w90 or 75w140. Consider Lucas Oil or Valvoline.. mid-priced and easy on the wallet.

In terms of color, a contrasting paint color allows quick observance of any leaks. Orange is a good color to use... that must by why Chevy used it on their engines.

A very unmolested 2WD '70 NP435:

An NP435 and NP205 pulled from a '76 a coupla weekends ago... natural (and rusty except where they seep lubricant).
