Unhappy Dana 60 Axel Conversion Speed Sensor Failure?

Newb To FTE!

I have a 1995 Ford E 250 and replaced the rear diff with a 2001 Dana 60 Rear Axel; quite the undertaking i must say.. Everything works perfectly, disc brakes and all, but the damn speedometer starts bouncing around at 45 MPH and then basically doesn't work. I went and bought a new speed sensor for a 2001 rear axel and placed it in there, but that didn't work at all. The speedometer just bounced around the whole time.... So I'm wondering if there is a compatiblilbty issue?? But why would the one in there currently somewhat function? I checked for shorts and didn't really find anything..

This happened right after i did the axel switch, not before...

It sucks because my Cruise Control doesn't work and its effecting the shifting of the transmission at high RPM!

Thanks!

I'm thinking you do have a compatibly issue.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) feeds pulses back into the ECM, ABS and the electronic speedometer from the tone ring.

With the years changes, I'm sure there are different tone rings used and also since '97+ with adding 4ABS there would be a tone ring change.

So, basically, if the tone ring in the differential is sending incorrect signals to the ECM+, your going to have some bad effects, which your having.

The VSS pulses effect not only the speedometer, it's Effecting shift points in the E4OD, and not that it matters that much, but also rear ABS.

Question?? Did the VSS connector clip right on the different years sensor??
Has the ABS yellow dash light come on??

Yes The VSS connector clipped right on and the ABS Yellow dash light "Did Not" Come on. When I purchased a new VSS from Napa the ABS did Come on though, so I'm thinking I'm going to order a FORD OEM version because they are notorious for failing??

Thanks.

I just check speed sender part numbers for you -

Motorcraft DY1123 (#F8529E731AB) is listed for 1990-2007
This is the only one listed for your 1995. (is Ford part #)

Motorcraft DY588 & DY1229 are listed for 2000-2004

So, maybe your correct, that Napa sold you the wrong part???

From the part numbers, I would try the DY1123 to see what it does?

So funny thing.... My dad has a 1996 ford Van with the same thing done to it; Axel conversion with a 1ton from a 2000, or 2001 and I pulled his VSS from the rear diff plugged it into mine and it works!!! HAHA go figure... But its weird because it looks a little different?? I had i minor bounce at 65 MPH, but nothing major at all, and I think thats somewhat normal for these vehicles. I'm going to order the DY1123 from the FORD dealership and see what that does, because he will need his back

Thankyou!
