Lend an ear for my 7.3 idle sounds vid

All the talk the last few months has me wondering if I should climb under my valve covers for the 1st time since owning.

Can any of you hear loose injectors??

I can hear what sounds like normal #8 cackle - but it's hard to say for sure if it's anything beyond that. Air in fuel can cause cackle (hutch mod), and loose injectors are real easy to square away on a warm engine - it's just awkward to get in there the first time.

Can you get a vid from left to front to right (or the like)?

Feeling good about Brown Truck! She has like 205,000 miles.

Rich should I redo while its warm or cold?
You want me to leave hood down and walk around from one side to the other at fender/hood level?

Thanks for the ears!

Your truck sounds normal to me - from that angle. I was just trying to be thorough, and wanted to hear what it sounded like around the front with the hood down.

This is what a couple of really loose injectors sounds like:

I drove 1500 miles like that - and got 18.5 MPG. These engines are tough.

Rich, with your video, will they get quiter as the engine warms up? My #1 has a good knock /tick when cold but goes away as the truck warms up. I thought it was just a tired injector but it's still there after installing my 160/30's.

With my video - they did not. Loose injectors are like Bam-Bam on steroids.

A knock that goes away with warming up, eh? Hutch mod? I see you have the FRx, but that's not a replacement for the Hutch. Air in oil is a fun one as our trucks age. Does the dip stick show a lot of bubbles after your normal drive?

just took a couple videos, waiting on them to upload to you-tube. When the EOT is 30deg, like it was yesterday morning when I got off, it was a bit louder than your video. this morning EOT was about 60 and it sounded like the OP's video, by the time EOT got to 120 I could barley hear it.

I haven't done the hutch mod, It's next on the list, went to start on it last week and couldn't find the angle I was planning on using for the bracket for my rancor filter, then got side-tracked, I need to get the stuff for in the tank too.

Haven't checked the oil after a drive, usually do it before I start up. I'll check that tomorrow...or today, whenever head to work again.

I hear the clicking. From the recording through your camera, it sounds more like a push rod... but YouTube sounds can be deceiving. Is there a metallic "tink"? Here's a little trick you can try (carefully): Block the microphone(s) with something (I used my fingers), then place the camera directly on the valve cover. This makes your camera a recording mechanic's stethoscope. Here's a test I did during a buzz:

I was wondering if it wasn't a valve or pushrod or something, since it was there before the Injector change. I'll try another video that way, and I'll probably plan on pulling the VC's this week on my day's off to see what I can see.

Also when it's cold and the ticking is the loudest the passenger side egt is about 100deg or so higher than the drivers, as the truck warms up and the tick quiets down the egt's will even out to only about 25-50 degrees differance.

cj, think you should start your own thread. So when petro responds with his vids, its not confusing then it already is...
