I currently own a 2000 Ford F150 5.4 with 4X4 Auto Trans and 135K miles. I have owned it 11 years, awesome truck.

I want to upgrade to a newer model F150 with more towing capacity. I think my 2000 model has a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds.

I haul two dual sport motorcycles, gear and tow a 4,500 pound travel trailer in the mountains.

What is the tow capacity of the 2004-2008 model years F150 with the 5.4 with 4X4?

Any other model suggestions for increased towing? (other than changing the tires or gearing)

The towing capacity of my 06 XLT 4x4 EC with 5.4L engine and 3.55 gear ratio wasn't much more than your 2000 is. I had the Tow Package and it was rated for about 7800 lbs. or close to that. Also take note of the frontal area of the trailer if you are towing enclosed. That is also a limiting factor of tow rating. My 06 pulled the enclosed car trailer pretty well. It was stable with the overload springs and WD hitch. But in any kind of headwind or crosswind or going up any incline required towing in 3rd gear rather than OD which sucked down the fuel. Towing on relatively flat Indiana interstate with a sustained diagonal 15-20 mph headwind I managed to get 8.7 mpg at 60-65 mph. That was without OD. That rpm was upwards of 2500-2600 at that speed. After that trip I bought an '08 CCSB 4x4 Powerstroke and deleted it.
Same trip, load, and nearly identical wind conditions the following year I pulled over 11 mpg driving 65 mph. The F150 would do what I wanted just fine, but I'm more comfortable with the SD diesel. As a bonus, the deleted diesel gets 2 mpg better highway as well than the F150 did. I was getting 17+ mpg highway with the F150 and I get 19+ highway with the diesel. If I were to have to go back to an F150 again, I would definitely be looking at '09 or newer to get that 6 speed transmission. It makes a big difference on the F150.

 

Thanks Greg! I did not know when they first came out with the 6 speed tranny but I want that transmission. I suppose I need to be looking at an 09 up. This is the knowledge I need.
