First Time with 1950 Ford F6

Hi there, Im brand new to the site, I have googled for a lot of advice before and keep finding this site, so I decided to join!

I just purchased a beauty, a 1950 Ford F6 with 61k on her. Shes a former Grain Body farm truck. Shes pretty rust free but has an issue Im not sure how to go about just yet.

The original I6 Flathead motor was replaced with a mileage maker straight 6 out of a 50's Ford car. I honestly would love to put a flathead 6 back in her, but havent got the money to just jump out and buy one yet, especially with another icey Northern NY Winter approaching. I am considering doing a swap, and am looking into options, but I have seen alot of different things online about being able to keep the stock transmission, and not keep the stock transmission. Its a manual 4 speed, with no slip rear. I do want to restore the truck and keep all original, however I just want her to move and enjoy her for alittle while too before getting the flathead I have to get later on, all painted and figured out.

Does anyone here know if that transmission will work with any other Ford engines not of the 50's. Any info you guys could shed would be much appriciated. Thanks guys!

I don't have the answer to your question but I do want to welcome you to FTE. This is the best place to learn about 48-56 trucks and you will get answers here.

But before you get too far you must show us pictures of your baby!

Without a paid (supporter) membership, you cannot upload pictures into the threads. However if you have photos loaded to other internet libraries you can link them here. I don't know what that file is that you tried to use from facebook, but it was not an 'image' file. Image files will end in 'gif, 'jpg, 'jpeg, .png etc. Here are the instructions to insert a photo from an online photo account.

You can use that trans with a small-block Ford Windsor series engine (289/302/351) or a small block Chevy (283 - 350), or many Olds, Pontiac, Buick, & Cadillac engines by getting a bellhousing adapter. But I'd be curious how they adapted the 215 (223?) 6-banger to it? I would guess the easiest way would be to use a '52 215 and its bellhousing, maybe even the trans that came with it. Is it synchro'd in 2, 3, and 4?

At one time, Ford offered a kit to swap in a 223 OHV I-6 in place of the flathead 226 L-6.

Thank you guys for all the Info!!! Thats my new baby that will be arriving wensday, (tomorrow). Im excited but at the same time alittle worried at the same time. The motor does suffer from blowby and may need new rings or just need a desparate tune up. I wouldnt mind keeping the engine in it however, Ive heard some horror stories about having to have the engine head machined, even if removed when cold to replace the rings. I dont know, it seems like everyone has a different opinion on what to do. The other aspect that worries me is handling the widowmakers. The front 2 tires are dry rotted, but the intertubes are good. They seem to be ok, just cosmetically bad. I will have to source a shop that can correctly disassemble the wheels(which will not be easy) so they can be sandblasted and repainted and reassembled on the truck. My plan is to take my time and get her looking beautiful again. I wonder if anyone is looking for the grain body back walls, I doubt I will be keeping these. Its an orginal Edbro back.

Nice looking truck!

Are you aware of the type of wheels it has? It looks like they may be lock-ring type wheels, but so-called "widowmakers" were also common. With either type caution is important when adding air or otherwise working on them, but WM's generally need to be outright replaced. If you google "Firestone RH-5" you will get many hits. Here's one:
