SN# confusion

Long story short.... trying to track down a lost title and coming up with noting even thought the truck has been in the family for decades. DMV and County offices have no record of this truck. With a little research on the frame number everything leads to a 1947 1 ton with a 6 cyl. It is not a 1 ton and has a wb of 114". No original engine. According to the old registrations in the vehicle it was licensed as 1942.

Here is the frame #

71GY387922

Anyone able to tell me for sure what it is?

How do I go about getting a Nebraska title for this?

Thanks

My '46 also has the "GY" mistake on the VIN/frame. Could our frame stamper been drunk or hungover that day? I have the original engine but that number wasn't on any of the paperwork for the Iowa title or the old Nebraska ones. If I ever get mine to the DMV, we'll see what they say the number is this time. I tried once and they told me the truck had just been titled in Arkansas or some such. The truck hadn't moved in over 30 years...
They then told me to bring the truck to them but it was in a million pieces and places by then. Now that it's back together, my new DMV is right down the hill. Maybe in the spring...

tl;dr I don't know

Same thing happened to me... I gave them some numbers off the old registration and they told me that they did show the truck in my grandpa's name and then it was titled in Montana, Illinois, Texas and just recently in Oklahoma. The truck has been in our possession for over 40 years and been in my shop for almost 20 years now. The title is lost and the state has no other record of it or it even being titled in NE. Not for sure on how to obtain a title now. They said i can get an "assembled vehicle" title when it is all done. But from the sounds of it, it sounds like lots of BS on what all info they want at that time. kinda at a loss at this point...

Isn't "assembled vehicle" DMV code for kit car? Nope, looks like this: Assembled so an all-new VIN.

That number you have is indeed a '47 6 cylinder 1 ton truck, how it would be registered as a '42 is anybody's guess. Remember, the numbers were hand stamped, so it is entirely possible that the worker stamped it wrong, got it mixed up with another.
Sounds like NE makes it difficult. Here in CA if its off registration for more than 7 years it's out of the system. In that case all we do is get a statement of facts from seller if they have no title, get it inspected by CHP, pay the fees and viola, they give you plates and a title, and its registered as the model year that it is.

I bought a 56 3/4 ton a couple years ago. It had been in the family since about 1960. I went to sell it and the title didn't match the frame or VIN number. It had a little Gulf Oil brass oval with a 3 digit number on the door post. My assumption is that it was sold on a fleet auction and they just handed out titles. The farmer licensed it year after year and never knew.
Could be a similar scenario here, title got mixed up somewhere in a past life and nobody ever caught it.

So how did gramps license it with no title? With the trip that ownership took, I'd say the title got passed off many years ago by accident when he sold a different vehicle. If all else fails, you can have a friendly towing company impound it as abandoned and get a storage lien title then sell it back to you.
